TWO BREACHES OF AWARD. FINE OF £3 FOR BUTCHER. Breaches of the Taranaki butchers’ award were admitted in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday by W. O’Brien. The Labour Department’s inspector, Mr. W. J. Berfyman, stated that the defendant had paid a second shopman less than the award rate of £5 5s a week and had employed boys or youths in excess of the number permitted by the award, namely, one boy or youth to three men. Defendant himself, said Mr. Berryman, worked as first shopman, and on the occasion of the inspector’s visit he was employing a man as second shopman at £5 a week, a boy at £3 and a second boy at £1 10s, though he was entitled to only one boy. Since the visit he had made up the deficiency in the second shopman’s wages. The truth of the inspector’s statement was admitted on defendant’s behalf by Mr. L. A. Taylor, who sifid that in moving from one shop to another defendant lost his copy of the award. Being himself stricken with rheumatism, he had to bring in an assistant for five weeks, and paid him £5 a week in ignorance of tho provisions of the award. The extra boy had been brought in during a rush period. He was a brother of the other boy and was glad to obtain employment at £1 10s a week. The magistrate, Mr. J. H. Salmon, gave judgment against the defendant for £2 in respect of the first and £'l in respect of the second breach.
