EVENTS ON RACE TRACKS
MANY MEETINGS SATURDAY TOPICS' FROM NEAR AND FAR. ’ ® A.R.C. AND A.J.C. CARNIVALS.
(By
“Moturoa.")
With racing at Ellerslie, Napier Park and Kurow on Saturday, the sporting, public will be well catered for, and in addition to these fixtures, the opening of the A.J.C. carnival will be of interest. # # e * At Randwick on Saturday the A.J.C. Derby, the Epsom and the Spring Stakes will be the main attractions, and although final payments are not due until Thursday, Dominion horses promise to be engaged in every race on the programme. * #
Aussie, Nightmarel),' Crown Area, Bright Glow, Paquito, White Fang, Perception, Gestb, High Disdain, Royal Duke and Briar Root are the Maorilanders in the Epsom, and at this stage Paquito is a slightly better favourite than Gilt Edge.
With Phar Lap, Honour and Nedda engaged in the Derby, New Zealand promises to feature prominently in the finish, and the form displayed by the Night Raid colt has made him a better favourite than Honour and Carradale, who have not yet raced this season.
Whether Limerick will take on the Spring Stakes, of £2500, one and 'a-half miles, depends, upon how he' galloped yesterday. He won the race two years ago, and last year he dead-heated with Winalot.
Nightmarch is also engaged in the Classic and this race would suit him much better than the Epsom Handicap, besides being a good gallop for his race in the Metropolitan on Monday. Concentrate, Oratrix and Tidal have also paid the first forfeits for the race.
Hunting Cry accounted for Admiral Drake so decisively in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas that he must now be considered a worthy rival for Pink Coat and Eaglet in 'the Great Northern Guineas. Hunting Cry’s half brother, White Fang, was a useful middle distance performer and, as Hunting Cry appears to have made an instant success at' "the ' stud,' ’ Hunting Cry looks likely' to turn' oUf 'even better th a Natalite’s son by Polydamon. # # #' *
- Hoylake was not nominated for the Dunedin meeting, but if all goes well with the imported horse from now on he will fulfil engagements at the Wellington' Racing Club’s spring meeting.' He looks an improved horse after' his run at Ashburton, and it is evident that he is very fit.
Dutch Money is on the easy list at present. The filly was suffering from an abscess on her jaw, but it has been lanced and she is now making a good recovery. The filly will be sent south for the Dunedin meeting,. with Honeycomb and the two-year-olds, Tarquinius, by Nightraid from Week End and Pharaoh, by Shambles from Palestrina. # * # *
Black Mint'was totally unsuited by the sharp bends at Orari last week, and in the circumstances his fourth to Wingatui in the concluding event on Friday was a good effort, states a southern exchange. Present intentions are to race him in the Kurow Cup next Saturday, and on a course that will be to his liking the Catmint gelding must be seriously considered with the appreciable impost of 8.0., C. Emerson has been retained to ride him.
Rapier ran two good races among the sprinters at Geraldine, carrying a big weight each day. He is in great health, and he should do well the first, time he races over a long journey. He is due to race at the -.Dunedin meeting, after which he will make a trip to Tfcntham.
Little notice need be taken of- the failure of Toxeuma on Saturday. In the first, place, he-was. conceding-the best-part of a stone* to smart gallopers like'Great Charter and Arrow Lad, and then, ridden by a horseman with little or no experience, he got badly off. Toxeuma was travelling, well at the finish of the race, and under more favourable circumstances will soon do better.
One of the most improved horses at Riccarton, so far as appearances go, is the Great Northern Derby winner Red Heckle. He looks much more robust at present than he did at three years, and the manner in which he has been working recently suggests that he is not far from his best form. He was nominated for the big handicap on the concluding day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting, but as Flair did. not perform sufficiently well against Pink Coat at Ashburton, when in receipt of much weight, to warrant her being sent to Auckland ■to contest the Great Northern Guineas, the proposed- trip 'to Ellerslie for both horses has been -abandoned. Red Heckle has been awarded 8.12 in the Electric Handicap at the Dunedin meeting, and will be ridden in his engagements at that fixture by C. Emerson. *#’ # * It was hard luck for Mr. T. H. Lowry that Great Charter should pull up laipe after winning '-the Flying Handicap at Hastings on Saturday, for his form indicated that he is well fonvard, write “The Watcher.” He could hardly w-alk just after the race, but a bit later appeared to be improving, and possibly the trouble is of a temporary nature. It will be remembered that Gascony pulled up in a very similar state after beating Paganelli in the Manawatu Stakes last March, yet he was all right again in few days. If Great Charter does not improve F. Davis’g Auckland trip with him and Chrysology maybe cancelled. While Great Charter’s performance in the Flying Handicap at Hastings on Saturday was good class, it is possible that that of Arrow Lad was even better. Great Charter raced last in April, while Arrow- Lad was making, hig first appearance since February, and was giving the wunner lib., and did not get away so well from the barrier. In addition Arrow Lad went over more ground, and while it may be balanced by the breakdown of Great Charter,'the form of Arrow Lad was a distinct indication that he is an. improved horse and likely to -win a good race before long. ROUNDELAY WITHDRAWN. CLOCKWORK RETURNS HOME. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The hurdler Clockw-ork returned from Australia by the Ulimaroa to-day. Roundelay has been scratched for the , Great Northern Guineas. ,
DRIZZLE FOR ELLERSLIE WORK. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Sept. 1. There was a slight drizzle when training work commenced at Ellerslie this morning but it cleared off and the weather, though dull, was fine for work. The course proper, with the flags 40 feet out "fiorn the rails was available for fast work and No. 3 grass track was also open, the going was fairly good. On the course proper, Respriatu*’ beat Thursby and Kawainga by a length and a-half over five furlongs in Imin 7 1-5 sec. • King-Emerald was in front of Gold Money and Eager Rose at the finish of .-five furlongs run in Imin 5 3-ssec, the first two furlongs being covered in 25 2-sscc. War Officer, Good Ideal and Restaurant were on terms at the end of half a mile completed in 53 - l-ssec. Restaurant pulled up lanie. Chief Link and Grand Spirit hopped away at the half mile post xnd were together at the finish, which was reached in 51 4-5 sec. There was nothing between Myolu and Lady A’Court over three furlongs run in 39 2-ssec. Currajong was too good for Golden Wedding, Brampton and Salamander, while running six furlongs in Imin 20sec, Brampton did not begin as well as the others but was finishing on nicely. Manawhcnua beat Running Over at the end of half a mile covered in 53 4-ssec. Alloy and Palmares jumped away in front- of Bombarder at .the five lurlong post, Alloy finishing in front in- Imm 6sec. Standfast was timed to run the last six furlongs of his task in Imin 25 4-ssec. The southern three-year-old, Pink Coat, had Silvermino as a companion over six furlongs. They were together all the way and after running the first two furlongs in 26sec, and three in 38 l-ssec, completed the distance in Imin 20sec. Pink Coat was on the outside and'as this was his first gallop at Ellerslie, which is the' reverse way to the South Island tracks, his effort was distinctly < pleasing. Corinax was too good for The Lover over six' furlongs finished in Imin 21sec. Vallar was doing his best to run half a mile in 54 3-ssec. The Mitchelson Cup candidate, Amor, had Leader as a companion over a mile. They ran the first half in 51 3-ssec, and the full distance in Imin 47 4-sse'c. Leader was a shade in front at the finish but Amor, who is not a good track worker, was finishing on better. Mountain Guido and Singleton were sent over a mile and the former had to be ridden hard down the straight to keep on terms with Singleton, their time was Imin 48 l-ssec. ‘ Bennie was in front of Lady’s Boy with Mon Star several lengths back at the end of a six furlong gallop in Imin 20 3-ssec. After breakfast Gay Cockade was going better, than Diamond Queen over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Measurer and Spring Abbey ran five furlongs in Imin 7 3-ssec. Red Lion and Katoma were timed to run six furlongs in Imin 23 l-ssec. The two-year-old, Our Comet, jumped off at the mile barrier and covered a couple of furlongs along the back in 24sec. Luxurious ran home from the six furlong post in Imin 24 4-ssec. Roman Pearl sprinted four furlongs in 55sec. Some Lady reeled off a five furlong task in Imin 6 3-ssec, and Good Boy was given a similar task, taking 54 2-ssec for the last half mile. On the No. 3 grass, Taneriri completed a circuit in Imin 4iisec, running the last six furlongs in Imin 22scc. TRACK WORK AT AVONDALE. Auckland, Oct. 1. All fast 1 work at Avondale this morning was done on the course proper with the trestles 50 feet out from the rails. The going was excellent. Historic, on - the outside of Star Stranger, ran a mile in Imin 46 3-ssec. He impressed more than Star Stranger, being slightly in front at the finish. He has improved since the Avondale meeting. • Lineage ran three furlongs in 39sec. False Scent easily disposed of Crimestor at the end of six furlongs completed in Imin 16 4-ssec. This was a particularly smart gallop, considering the distance he was out from the rails. Maori Boy gave Appellant a start and ■was alongside him at the finish of five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec. Cylinder covered half a mile in 50 4-5 sec and finished in front of Knightlike, a very pleasing effort. Transformer and Piuthair (on the .outside) fan a mile in Imin 50 3-ssee, but neither are good track horses. Benzora and Te Atiawa covered half a mile down the back in 52 l-ssec. Valquette easily defeated Gold Lily over half a mile in 52 3-ssec. PADDON AND GAY DUKE OUT. Auckland, Oct. 1. Paddon was scratched at 9 a.m. .for the Mitchelson Cup and Gay Duke for all engagements at the Auckland spring meeting. TARANAKI DISTRICT COMMITTEE. RACING PROGRAMME ADOPTED.
