Kilburn pulled up lame after a gallop recently, and has been turned out on his owner’s property at Rata. *> # « * Brilliant Light is building up now, and it will not be long before he makes amends for recent defeats. # # # # Booster is to race on the West Coast of the South Island. It will take some weight to stop h:m here. 0 # * * * Lineage’s time, Imin 1 l-ssec, is the fastest that has been recorded since the Avondale Stakes was extended to five furlongs. - # # *■ * Leader’s winning sequence was broken at Avondale, where he missed the jump out and was in a. hopeless position all the way. Next time he may begin better.- . - ' •■' « •* * . Maori Boy acted up to track form .at Avondale and scored his first win since last. February;. Now. that he has <rot overjiis. /.‘course shyness’’, he should do big things. ■ .•„ • , # • *• • On the • strength of his Rosehill Guineas; win Phar- Lap is now - first favourite for the A.J.C. Derby. If he wins both races he -will- be the..second horse to do it since the Guineas race was instituted in 1910.. Biplane was the other. #. # • • # - #- • Blimp-was- unlucky at Wanganui.and is /coming -oil ...with every gallop. On a dry track he is always ■ dangerous, and •runs out a good’ten'-furlongs" in second class company. Awapuni touts intendto. follow him-from/ now-on,- at “the : smalls.” • ’ ' *** - - « - Suomi (Finland- War Talk) won the Sandown, Park Handicap on September 11,.and the following race fell to Baukok (Egypt-Royiraj. 0 « ■ . * * . * Mr. J. Gatenby, Havelock North, will be a very pleased man as the result of Phar Lap's., victory in the < Rosehill Guineas.' Mr. Gatenby owns the two-year-old full sister to this promising o-alloper, whom he purchased for 60 Guineas at the Trentham sales last January. $ * * * • Mr. G. D. Greenwood will be present at Randwick to see Honour contest the A.J.C. Derby on Saturday next, and if his colours are in the van it will be no new experience for the Canterbury horse-owner. Biplane, Gloaming and Cupidon have all won the Australian blue riband, and no doubt Mr. Greenwood has. great hopes of making the forthcoming one the fourth. # * * * During the last ten years .the public have picked the Epsom Handicap whiners remarkably well. In that period the first (or equal first) favourite has won seven times. The Metropolitan Handicap, on the other hand, has resulted in many surprises, and the public’s elect has been first home only three times. The speediest youngster seen out in recent two-year-old trials at Melbourne was Forfeit, the well-named daughter of Paper Money and Procrastinate.. She won her heat by six lengths, in 49 1-5 sec —a record for the trials. Forfeit cast her present owner, Mr. D. Stanley, 700 guineas as a yearling,-and is a half -sister to Pluto (by Sutala) and to Bachelor (by Absurd). • *• # * The scratching of Ramulus, a pronounced favourite for the Epsom Handicap, was a body blow for ante-post bettors, who abound in Australian racing circles. Ramulus was sent out favourite for the Tramway Handicap at Rosehill but failed to run up to expectations, finishing just out of a place. On pulling up it was found that he had struck himself and was lame. The result was that he was withdrawn from the Epsom on the following Monday. This was bad luck for George Price, but he still had Reonui and Killarney in the race when the last mail left Sydney. » ♦ ft * Meprisanf, who won the Trial Plate at Ashburton in fine style, is a three-year-old brother to Scoff and to the unfortunate but speedy Kuaocee, as well as halfbrother to Scorn (by Clarenceux). Meorisant is engaged in the Dunedin Guineas, but whether he will be a runner or not in the classic depends upon his showing on the first day at Wingatui. Chide, who won the big handicap at Ashburton, has won five times in his last six starts, and his chances in the New Zealand Cup are fancied in some quarters. Although a lazy galloper, he stays on well and will have friends in the Riccarton race with 7.5. Chide’s dam, Reproachful, is a full sister to Disdainful, the dam of Meprisant, so it would hardly be possible to get a winning pair more closely related, both being by the imported Polymelus horse .Paladin. # « # # Prickles, after tailing the field for most of the journey, gave Chide a good “go” at the finish of the big race at Ashburton, and made amends by winning at Geraldine. Prickles was bred by °Sir Geo. Clifford, but was sold and won in the colours of Mr. W. J. Blake. She is a four-year-old mare by Pan-mure-Brambletye and is a full-sister to Tearaway and a half-sister to Thorndale (by Sanquhar or Antagonist) and to Thornicroft (bv Boniform). She is engaged in the New Zealand Cup but may not have the stamina to run out a solid two miles. * ft . ft * Several New Zealanders left by the Makura on Thursday to attend the A.J.C. spring meeting at Rand wick. They included Messrs. H. A. Knight, owner of Limerick and Paquito; Morgan O’Brien, the well-known Christchurch trotting owner; H. A. Card, former owner of The Banker, and O. Wellwood, sporting editor of the Christchurch Press, ft * ft ft Mr. J. Low, stud groom at Mr. G. M. Currie’s Koatanui stud, reports the following foalings: —Inland, bay colt by Limond; Tukia, dead .filly by Limond; Oreum, brown filly by Psychology; Rose Queen, bay filly by Thespian; Motley, chestnut filly by Lomond; Damaris, chestnut filly by Thespian; Veil, bay colt by Pombai; Aspic, bay colt by Limond; White Tulip, bay colt by Grand Knight; Glimpse, bi’own filly by Shambles; Makepeace, brown filly by Limond; Homage, bay colt by Pombai. ft ft ft # The light-weight jockey, A. H. Eastwood, rode at. Geraldine last week, but he will miss Kurow next week, as he has accepted an engagement to ride Mr. W. G. Stead’s horses at Napier Park on the same day. He will then make a trip to Southland, where he has several rides at the Birchwood Hunt meeting, after which he will return to Wingatui for the Dunedin meeting. — • ■
