HURRICANE IN BAHAMAS

Received Sept. 29, 5.5 p.m. Miami (Florida), Sept. 27. Twenty deaths as the result of a two days’ hurricane at Nassau, Bahamas, are reported by a dispatch to the New York Herald late on Friday night. The steamer Princess Montagu is reported to be aground near Nassau. Part of the crew of 23 was rescued in n life line. The area ,was struck by a squall travelling at 48 miles an hour. Electric light and power lines have been disrupted, but property damage is not seri--OU6. , _ A later message says a tropical hurricane on Saturday night was, moving across the island-studded southern extremity of Florida, with predictions that- it would continue westward into the Gulf of Mexico. Driving gales swept the east coast of the peninsula, wrecking a considerable amount of property. Several persons’ were injured at Miami and apprehension is felt for towns in the south. Tumultuous seas did the fate of many boats, two of which, the Isle of June and the Baliamaian, were large craft and known to be in the path of the hurricane with 20 men aboard. Dozens of small craft were broken to pieces at Nassau. The colonial Government is taking stock of what is described as the worst blow in the history of Florida. Nassau apparently lacked power to operate the radio which gave tne first news of the disaster. Havanna escaped the hurricane but suffered considerable damage from the high seas.
