PATEA BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. F. Ramsbottom) presiding. Councillors T. A. Christiansen, C. R. Honeyfield, F. Naismith, G. Pettigrew, T. Hcott and C. Carey were also present. Mr. P. Rossiter requested that a verandah be erected in front of his shop in Egmont Street. It was decided to obtain 1 quotations for the work and proceed with it when financial arrangements are made. ' The district Public Trustee wrote regarding a loss of £l6 by the late W. R. Salt on the water tower contract, and asking for some relief.—The letter was read, no action being taken. A letter from the Hospital Board regarding a vacancy on the cemetery board created by the death of Mr. W. Watson, was received, and it was decided to appoint Cr. Christiansen to the position. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. Watson was passed in silence. The Patea Beach Improvement Society requested an extension of pipe lines to the new bathing shed at the beach.— Granted subject to conditions regarding water supply. Users of extraordinary water supplies are to be notified that during the months of January, February and March their supplies may be discontinued without 'further notice.
Support is to be given the efforts of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce to effect improvements in the Main North Road from Mahoenui to Pio Pio. The Patea County Council asked that when the borough council required the services of the county engineer the county council be notified. Request to be acceded to.
It was decided to support a suggestion from the Main Highways Board that traffic inspectors be appointed to minimise damage to highways by overloaded lorries. It was decided to ask the Education Board to allow the rain gauge to be maintained at the school, particulars to be forwarded to the meteorological office regularly. The reports of the streets and lighting committees were adopted, but it was decided to refer back the report of the Mayor and the health inspector on the removal of rubbish for further consideration. Cr. Carey and the buildings inspector were appointed a committee to report on a certain building at the next meeting. <• The Mayor reported the earthquake relief fund had reached the sum of £195 13s 6d.
