MUSIC EXAMINATIONS
RESULTS OF STKATFOBD TESTS. Of the candidates who presented themselves for the examination held under the auspices of the Royal Academy of AlusG and the Royal College of Music in Stratford by Dr. Markham Lee on Thursday there were only two failures. The examiner commented favourably on the standard of teaching which had been given to candidates. Held in the Town Hall on Friday night, the Stratford Fire Brigade’s fancy dress ball for children attracted a good attendance of youthful dancers who were nearly all garbed in fancy costumes.
The polka proved the most popular dance with both young and old. Apart from the dancing games were played and the grand march constituted an impressive sight. For the best fancy dresses in the hall Mr. P. Aitken presented prizes as follow;—

National dress, girls. —Margaret Bird (Scottish Lass) 1, Ruth Summerfield (Old English) 2. Fancy dress. —Joyce Cummins (Red Riding Hood) 1, Ross King (Drummer Boy) 2. Most, original dress, boys.’ —F. Cummins (King of Hearts) 1, N. Aitken (Prince Charming) 2. National dress, boys.—W. Davis (Chinaman) 1, O. Jones (Cowboy) 2. Two special prizes, donated by Mrs. Marsh, were won by Baby Horner (Red Indian) and Hector Crawford (Tramp).

Vince (Cricketer), Margaret Bird (Highland Lass), Joyce Cummins (Red Riding Hood), Francis Cummins (King' of Hearts), David Bird' (Gypsy Girl), Ross King (Drummer Boy), Hector Crawford, New Plymouth (Tramp), Thelma King (Lady’s Handbag), Ruth Summerfield (Old English), Owen Jones (Cowboy), Norma Lentell (Pierrette), Doris Lentell (Pierrette), W. Horn (Indian). Marsh’s orchestra provided excellent music and the masters of ceremonies were Messrs Butcher and B. Davis. EXAMINATIONS AT ELTHAM. The following pupils of Airs. Blennerhassett, Eltham, passed the practical examinations conducted by Dr. Alarkham Lee on August 29. at Eltham: — Advanced Grade. —Vera Elizabeth Beech (honourable mention). Pianoforte, higher division. —Winifred Joy Campbell, Isaline Jean Campbell, Rhoda Alay Phillips. PUKENGAHU NEWS. A kitchen evening 'was given in the Pukengahu Hall on Thursday to Aliss V. (Pop) O’Neill, in honour of her approaching marriage to Air. R. Irwin. The evening was spent in dancing, cards and vocal items, the music being supplied by Alisses Coleman, Old, O’Neill,. Walsh, and Alessrs Copelstone and Coleman. Songs were rendered by Alesdames Harper and Alontgomerie, and were greatly appreciated. Air. E. Harper, on behalf of the hostesses, Alesdames J. Walsh and D. McGuinness, asked Miss O’Neill to accept the numerous parcels, and in doing so wished her happiness and prosperity. He remarked that the well-packed hall was sufficient testimony of the esteem in which the young couple were held in the district. After the singing of, “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” Air. Irwin, on behalf of Miss O'Neill, thanked - those present for the many gifts. Air. J. Walsh, as M.C., kept things going merrily until an early hour in the morning, when a most enjoyable function was brought to a close by the singing of Auld Lang Syne. - PERSONAL.
Air. R. V-. Kay has been appointed secretary of the Stratford branch of the Egmont Alpine Club. The annual meeting of the club will be held in October. Aliss Freda Hewitt left by the mail train on Saturday for Dunedin University.
