HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP

CANTERBURY BEATS AUCKLAND.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Aug. 16. Canterbury retained the New Zealand Hockey Shield by beating Auckland at Hagley Park to-day by two goals to one. Auckland scored first. Grace and Watts took the ball to the circle and passed to Anthony, who scored an easy goal. Canterbury equalised after a spell of even play when Grace centred to Bell, who scored a fine goal. Play was fast and exciting in the second half. Auckland had a territorial advantage, but poor work in the circle threw chances away. Eventually Canterbury came away in a fine passing rush at the end of which Grace shot a smart goal from a difficult angle.
