ACTION AGAINST NEWSPAPER
CONTEMPT OF COURT ALLEGED. TRADES HALL OFFICIALS ACT. By Telecraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Aug. 15, 7.55 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 15. Application was made to the New South Wales Full Court to-day for an order nisi for a writ of attachment alleging contempt of court against the proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald and the publisher, Herbert Dadswell, on behalf of Jock Garden, Kavanagh, M. P. Ryan and other members of the Trades Hall disputes committee, who are awaiting prosecution on a charge of conspiracy in connection with the timber workers’ strike. Counsel for applicants submitted that the Herald editorials of July 29 and August 7 contained comments unfair and injurious, inferring that Garden and the others arrested were responsible for' the acts of the “basher gangs, 3 ’ and their trials in consequence were likely to be prejudiced. Arising out of mass picketing disorders at ' Hudson’s timber yards at Glebe, the police raided the Trades Hall on July 22 and arrested Jock Garden, secretary of the Labour Council, J. Culbert, M.L.C., secretary of the Timber Workers’ Union, W. Terry, the union’s organiser, C. Reeves and M. P. Ryan, members of the disputes committee, and W. Paton, of the Ironworkers’ Union. All were charged with conspiracy and admitted to bail of £l5O. The arrests caused a stir in industrial circles.
