IMPROVED SHOP PREMISES

H. 8., NEW 1-1.1 MOUTH, ALTERATION

Extensive alterations to the front of Hallenstein Bros., New Plymouth establishment, modelled on recent reconstructions of the same firm’s Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin branches, should, when complete, ’effect a considerable improvement' to the attractiveness of Devon Street central as a shopping centre. In addition to the shop front, alterations are being made to the rear of the building, and will provide extra space a quarter of the size of that already in use. The front will be remodelled in a modern style with three deep in-goings, and will be finished in light oak, making its appearance as modern as any of those in the cities. The question of lighting has been studied, and special effects will be obtained by means of reflectors and floodlights. Overlights above the windows will allow the shop windows to be lighted by direct daylight. Besides the addition to the floor space inside the building, the interior will be fitted up on modern styles and the layout of all departments will be considerably improved. The direct daylight liglitinor scheme will be curried out throughout the interior by means of the overlights, which will be constructed in the altered street front and will also constitute one of the main improvements to the building.
