SIXTEEN . SEAMEN KILLED
WHOLE TURRET WRECKED
8-INCII GUN SHATTERED
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received July' 27, 11.5 p.m. London, July’ 27.
The explosion of an 8-inch gun on the cruiser Devonshire wrecked the whole turret and killed six men outright, injured ten who died soon afterwards, and wounded 12. Practically all were from Plymouth. The accident occurred during exercises near Skiathos, off the eastern coast of Greece. It is understood an 8-ineli gun manned by marines exploded, presumably as the result of a misfire or a Hare-back.
The wounded are being placed aboard the hospital ship Maine in the Gulf ot Volo. The Devonshire landed the bodies at Volo, where the townspeople rendered homage. Greek and British flags were half-masted.
The battleship Queen Elizabeth, with Admiral Field aboard, is going to Athens, presumably to hold an inquiry’.
