WOOLLEY TO THE RESCUE

BIG SCORE IN CRICKET TEST

ENGLAND VERSUS SOUTH AFRICA.

RECORD SCORE IN PARTNERSHIP.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 28, 5.5 p.m. London, July 27.

Woolley came gallantly to England’s rescue in the test match against South Africa at Old Trafford, making a third wicket stand with Wyatt, after two wickets were down for 36, which beat the previous highest third \Vicket partnership in Anglo-African matches. The pair put on 245 in two and three-quarter hours.

Twenty thousand spectators attended, despite dull weather, realising the South African team was stronger than when it I’ost at Leeds and hoping for an exciting contest. The visitors’ fielding was good. Alorkel’s and Quinn’s bowling obviously bothered Sutcliffe and Bowley, but it did not perturb Woolley, who promptly walked into it in the most tradesmanlike manner, employing a variety of strokes and establishing the partnership. Confidence enabled him to score soundly and neatly, despite the fact that six bowlers were tried before lunch. Eventually Woolley, who hit twenty fours, skied Vincent and was caught. His innings was not devoid of luck. Wyatt signalised his first test appearance in England with a versatile, well-made 113, including thirteen fours. He ended by giving the wicket-keeper an easy catch through playing late. ( 'The teams were: —
