OPUNAKE NEWS.

TOWN BOARD. At the adjourned meeting of the Town Board the members present were: Crs. A. J. Brennan (chairman), W. E. Gunson, F. Hammond, W. J. S. Dudley and A. Raynor. The department’s inspector (Mr. Gooding) waited on the board in reference to general administration. He suggested that all household water tanks be fitted with a washout valve for cleaning tanks. He also recommended for consideration a feasible drainage system for the main portion of the town. The suggestion is to pipe sufficientwater from the Waiau River, via the Ihaia Road, with an outlet to what is known as “Butterfish Hole.” He also recommended that rubbish receptacles be provided by householders. The various recommendations were favourably considered. The sewerage recommendation was considered to be affected by financial considerations. If the ratepayers in the proposed area were favourable to a special rate and guarantee a sufficient loan the proposal could be carried out. The question is to be discussed at a special meeting.

The competition for the afternoon tea trade in Opunake has become so keen that a complaint was laid before the town board protesting against marts and vendors of eatables not licensed to do so. The proprietor of the Vice Regal dining rooms pointed out that various local societies compete for this trade free from restrictions. This, he contended, was unfair trading. The board decided to ask the inspector to inspect the premises at the sale yards, and if satisfactory to collect a registration fee. The saleyards' “mart” was erected during the war period for the purpose of providing light luncheons and afternoon teas. The proceeds went' to the war relief funds. Since then marts are held under the auspices of various guilds controlled by the ladies. Mr. A. Fake’s tender of £l5O 10s for improvements tc the town hall was accepted. The improvement' will bring the town hall up-to-date regarding conveniences.

The sum of £5 5s war voted to the West Coast earthquake fund. Mr. A. Hickman’r, application for section 2, block 26, at an annual rental of £7 was accepted. Accounts amounting to £153 were passed for payment.

The gale last Sunday lifted a verandah from its fixtures in the main street, and made it a heap of ruins. A few sheets of iron were blown off the building recently in the occupation of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. The milk staging at the Ihaia factory was carried clean away to the adjoining farm.
