OKATO NEWS

VISIT OF CAPT. McGREGOR’S MOTH. (From Our Own Correspondent), Friday was quite a red letter day for Okato, when Capt. McGregor paid a visit to the district. The Moth, damaged at Pungarchu, not yet being repaired, the machine used was obtained from Mr. Douglas Mill. Owing to the short notice, there was not a large attendance, but those present thoroughly enjoyed themselves, about 30 taking the air. The hall committee erected a marquee, and the ladies’ committee provided lunch and afternoon tea. Putting the shot, stepping the chain, etc., kept up interest between flights, and also helped the funds of the hall committee. GENERAL ITEMS. The Bishop of Waikato will be visiting Okato on Monday 22 at 7 p.m. His Lordship will induct the vicar (Rev. J. Adams) at St. Paul’s Church. After the induction service, a special evening will be held in the Hempton Hall, particulars of which will be advertised later. On Monday, the vicar with the secretary for the district, attended a meeting at Korn, the object being to form a new sub-district there. The outcome was entirely satisfactory, and the new organisation will function immediately. Owing to the very stormy night there was only a small congregation at the special thanksgiving service on Sunday evening. On Tuesday the county council commenced work with the small crusher, crushing for the Saunders Road metalling, while the rotary is engaged at the Stony River depot. With the addition of the bridge contracts, this winter is providing quite an exceptional amount of work, but there has been plenty of labour available.

At Stony Biver sale on Tuesday there was a fair yarding of sheep, cattle and horses, but competition was very dull. The stock was showing signs of the wintry conditions - lately experienced, and the sales effected were at prices showing a decline. ' There will be no hardening until the weather improves. The farm occupied by Dravitski Bros., and owned by the Davidson estate, was sold last week, Mr. L. O’Sullivan being tiie purchaser. Mr. O’Sullivan has since disposed of 50 acres to W. G. Brown. PERSONAL. Mr. E. Gibson, whose injuries when knocked down by a motor-cycle, were more serious than -at. first believed, is now on the mend. Mr. Walter Julian had the misfortune to contract pneumonia in addition to his broken leg, and his condition during the week was very grave. He is now improving. Mr. F. Hoskin returned home on Friday after a long stay in the New Plymouth hospital. Mrs. J. S. Fax is spending a holiday in the Wanganui district.
