MANAIA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

DENTAL CLINIC PROPOSAL. The Manaia School Committee met on Wednesday evening, Mr. A. Gamlin presiding. The headmaster, Mr. J. Nairns, reported that the primary roll was 279 (average attendance 245.6) and the secondary roll 43 (average 40.1). As arranged, pupils desiring it had been given cocoa at lunch time. It had been necessary to keep a good lire going to have sufficient boiling water and this had had a tendency to overheat the infant room. Mr. Elliot, representing the Health Department, had visited the school to make inquiries regarding the proposed dental clinic. The work of the school was progress-

ing very satisfactorily. It was proposed to enter a drill squad and two choirs from the school in the Eltham competitions next week The chairman stated the committee had to consider whether it would be prepared to raise £5O to establish a dental clinic at Manaia school. The committee deferred the matter for a month in order that ways and means of raising money could be investigated After a discussion on the matter of supplying cocoa at mid-day it was resolved, under the circumstances, to discontinue the experiment.

It was decided to convey to Mr. Dakers (a former chairman of the committee) and family a resolution of sympathy in the recent bereavement. PERSONAL ITEMS. Dr. McDiarmid, formerly of Hawera and now of Tauranga, is spending a few days at Hawera. He is accompanied by Mrs. McDiarmid. Mr. C. R. Williams, Gisborne, one of the United Party’s organisers, is visiting South Ta-vnaki. Mr. A. J. Glasson, of the Department of Agriculture, has returned to Hawera from Wellington. GENERAL ITEMS. The sccretar yof the South Taranaki Winter Show Company, Mr. L. O. Hooker, has procured from the Empire Marketing Board for presentation to the New °Plymouth Boys’ High School, a large map of the world showing the trade routes of the British Empire. The map, which measures 20ft. by 10ft., was obtained at the request of the headmaster, Mr. W. H. Moyes, who waf greatly interested in this and other Marketing Board posters at last year’s winter show. M”. Hooker will present the map to the school at 3 p.m. today.

A trip to the ski ground on Mount Egmont will be made during the weekend by members of the Alpine Club under the leadership of Mr. A. Snowden. If the ski track is not usable the party, will climb Fantham’s Peak.

Captain M. C. MacGregor, of Hamilton Airways, Ltd., left Hawera on Wednesday morning for Auckland, where he was to take delivery of a new DH Sloth machine. He proposed to fly the machine to Hamilton yesterday and bring it on to Hawera to-morrow for use in passenger flights.

Evidences of the earliness of the dairy season are apparent in South Taranaki. Yesterday 90 calves were collected in the neighbourhood of Hawera and forwarded to Patea.

The series of winter euchro parties and dances in aid of the Manaia School will be concluded this evening at the Manaia Town Hall, when a number of special prizes in addition to the usual prizes will be given. On Monday evening' a euchro party will be held in aid of the earthquake relief funds and on Tuesday ladies are holding a shop day for the same purpose.

The secretary of the South Taranaki boys’ and girls 5 clubs have a display of carrots and mangolds grown in their competition plots. The display was arranged by Mr. A. J. Glaflson, Hawera, win* etf&ui piat it has attracted a-great

deal of attention. People to" whom ho spoke at Well' gton seemed to know little of the work of the boys’ and girls’ clubs and were very much impressed with the 'evidence given by the exhibit of the substantial yields of root crops in South Taranaki.

The Tokaora Farmers’ Union will hold a social gathering on Tuesday evening ’for the benefit of the earthquake relief fund. Prizes for euchre and dancing, supper, music and all requirements are being given without charge, so that the whole of the proceeds will go to the fund. It is hoped that everyone in the district will make an effort to be present, and that residents who cannot attend will send donations in cash or in kind.

Opunake will have its Scottish night to-night, when the Hawera Scottish Society’s concert party will give its successful entertainment at the Town Hall. Selections by the Hawera Pipe Band, items by good artists, and the “Crystal Set” musical comedy will be included in the programme, and a dance will follow.
