RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS
EXTENSION TO GERMANY. ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copy right. London, July 7. Over 400 former Rhodes scholars assembled in the banqueting hall at Rhodes House, Oxford, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the scholarship. Mr. Stanley Baldwin presided, and the Prince of Wales was the chief guest. There were 19 Australians and five New Zealanders amongst those present, headed by Mr. K. Sisam, the 1910 scholar. For the first time since the war Germany was represented. Three toasts were “The King,” “the President of the United States,” and “the President of the German Republic.” Mr. Baldwin, in proposing the toast of “The Memory of the Founder,” stated that he had received cable messages from Australia, New Zealand, and other parts of the world where the Rhodes scholars were holding similar celebrations. He proceeded to announce on behalf of the trustees that it had been decided that the scholarships should again be available for Germany. Mr. Baldwin explained that Jive scholarships which had been taken from Germany in 1916 would remain with the Dominions, but that those now given would be extra, thus enabling four German Rhodes scholars to go to Oxford.
