BRICKLAYERS’ HARVEST

INSATIABLE DEMAND REPORTED.

The West Coast is living up to it» reputation as “the golden coast,” so far as bricklayers are concerned Owing to the havoc caused by the recent earthquake an insatiable demand for bricklayers has set in from the West Coast and according to statements made at last night’s meeting of the Canterbury Master Builders’ Association local build ers who wish to retain bricklayers in their employ have been compelled to pay them wages which under other cir cumstances would be regarded as out of the question. The chairman asked members if they had noticed any shortage of bricklayers as the result of the earthquake. “It has come to my knowledge,” said one member, “that the secretary of th? Bricklayers’ Union offered men 30s a day to go to the West Coast, and their era ployer had to pay them half-a-crown a <tay above that in order to keep them." A member: They’re getting 5s an hou» on the Coast. I have heard that some of them are earning £2 10s a day. “Alter all, it is their harvest, and it Won’t last very long,” said the secretary, Mr. W. H. Winsor. “The education board had to pay 30s a day to two bricklayers it sent to the Coast. 9
