ITALY AND THE PAPACY

LATERAN TREATY RATIFIED.

By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rome, J uno 6.

The Exchange of the ratifications of tho Lateran Treaty was carried out this morning with picturesque ceremony. A notable feature was that Signor Mussolini was the first Premier of United Italy who ever set foot in the Vatican, when he entered Cardinal Gasparri’s Palace to deposit the State ratification.

Directly the ceremony was over the. Pope’s Swiss guards mounted sentry at the approaches to the Vatican City as a sign of sovereignity. Simultaneously the bronze gates of the Palace were thrown open as a signal of peace between the Church and State. In accordance with the agreement Signor Mosmoni, Minister of Finance, handed Cardinal Gasparri a cheque for £8,156,250 drawn on the Bank of Italy and Government 5 per cent, bonds to the value of £10,869,56’5.

EFFECT UPON UNITED STATES.

SUGGESTED REPRESENTATIVES

Received June 9, 5.5 p.m. Washington, Juno 8.

American diplomatic authorities believe the recognition of the Vatican City sovereignty by the United States is inevitable although the exchange of representatives is improbable. In the opinion of the State Department the two problems are entirely ■separate. Recognition of sovereignty would be but the recognition of an obvious ffidt, whereas the exchanging of representatives would depend on the state of American interests in the Vatican City which aro not expected to warrant a diplomatic mission.
