SOUTHLAND FARMERS’ VISIT
FINAL ARRANGEMENTS MADE.
The programme finally adopted for the visit of 150 Southland fai’mers to New Plymouth is as follows:—
.Monday, June 17.—Special train arrives at 12.15 p.m. Short welcome to be extended at the station by the Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths), the president of the Farmers’ Union (Mr. S. Vickers), president of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce (Mr. C. H. Weston), and the chairman of the Taranaki County Council (Mr. J. S. Connett)-; 1.30 p.m., leave on a motor run to Kawaroa Park, the port, Western Park, St. Mary’s Church, the racecourse, Pukekura Park (afternoon tea), an approximate distance of 16 miles. Evening free. Tuesday, June 15.—5.30 a.m.: Visit to fertiliser works at Smart Road, where party will later divide into sections to visit the farms of the following: G. H. Bell (Oakura),. H. Sal way (Bell Block), H. C. Sampson (Hillsborough), W. Hall (Lepperton), A. Weir (Kent Road), W. K. Morris (Oakura), J. N. Blyde (Lepperton). Return for lunch at 12.30. 1.30 p.m.: Visit to Mt. Egmont (afternoon tea). 8 p.m.: Entertainment at Devon Tearooms (late May’s). Wednesday, June 19. —Party leaves.
The secretary reported to the meeting of town and country committees that for the all-day trips on the Tuesday over 40 cars would be available, but there was yet a'difficulty in providing cars for the Monday afternoon owing to the poor response from the townspeople. The country people had answered well, and he suggested a subcommittee should be set up to endeavour to obtain sufficient cars for the three-hour run around the town on,the Monday afternoon. Messrs Blundell, Duff, ' Spence and Sturm were appointed a sub-committee in this connection.
