EMPIRE WEEK OBSERVANCE

INTEREST OF MANUFACTURERS. Ae a result of the operations of the Victoria League since the last Empire : Week in New Plymouth, a widespread response has been received from organbat’icns interested in the devclipmcnt ;bf the Empire trade, as we: as from a mnrnbcr of manufacturing firms. The New Plymouth business people have discussed the ma'Aer with the executive of the Victoria League, and ; the greater interest taken in the movement by the business people augurs well for the success of this year’s Empire Week, which will take place from May 20 to 25 inclusive. On Empire Day (May 24) there will be a special gathering of school children, notwithstanding the occasion comes in the winter holidays, and there w£H probably also be other attractions at tlie Victoria League rooms. It is proposed to have an essay competition among the school Children after the holidays on some fetibject such as “Thoughts on Empire,” after the children have seen the displays that will be made by the shopkeepers. 3 ■ Correspondence has been carried on between the Victoria League and the High Commissioner in London. Sir James Parr has taken a keen interest id the proposal and has secured considerable quantities of display mutecr and advertising material setting out the value of Empire trading. These are being sent direct to New” Plymouth by the S.S. Rotorua, which is due in a few days. In addition- to this Sir James has secured tfie interest of a large number of British manufacturers, who are willing to eend out posters and printing matter suitable for display in an Empire Week celebration. Chambers of Commerce and such organisations are taking a lively interest. in the event, and the Imperial Daughters of the Empire (Canada), an organisation which correspondeuds with the Victoria League, also similar institutions ‘in South Africa, are all showing practical interest, which goes to show that some yery attractive displays will be seen tiis year. t
