QUEEN MARY’S BIRTHDAY

The Queen celebrated her 61st birthday very quietly on May 26, says a London correspondent. In the afternoon the court moved to ■ Sandringham for Whitsun, and the Queen spent tire morning at Buckingham Palace, where she was visited by Princess Elizabeth. The baby princess left 145, Piccadilly, by car, accompanied by her father, and she clasped very tightly a lovely bouquet, which she herself presented to her grandmother. The posy was made with a centre of pink roses, surrounded by forget-me-nots and love-in-a-mist, and it was tied with blue and silver ribbons, fringed with lilies of the valley, while the whole was set off by a frilling of pink tulle. Although the princess fulfilled her part very charmingly when she presented her gift to the Queen, she was, perhaps, a little young to have thought of the present for herself, and one feels that such a charmingly conceived gift is typical of the Duchess of York, and it must have been she who planned such a delicate tribute for Her Majesty. It is quite certain that nothing could have pleased the Queen more; she is openly devoted to her small grand-daughter, and the simplicity of the present would appeal particularly to Queen Mary, who is eminently simple in her tastes.
