STRATFORD NEWS

CARE OF CHILDREN'S TEETH, WORK OIF DENTAL CLINIC. “Decay of teeth can and must be prevented in the interests of national health,” says a pamphlet issued by the Health Department. Realising the importance of this statement, mothers of children attending the Stratford Primary School have taken a keen interest in the establishment of the school dental clinic which has been in operation for four months under the charge of Miss M. J. Oliver. At the’ present time 110 children are regularly attending the clinic, while 70, having had treatment, will need no further attention for six months. The general standard of the teeth of the pupils at the Stratford School is fair, cases of decay ’being more noticeable among the older children, who in their younger years were not so fortunate in having an up-to-date clinic. The dental room is a large and airy one situated in the old technical school. The necessary apparatus for dealing with stoppings and extractions was supplied by the department, the local school committee providing the room. Miss Oliver does ten stoppings a day on an average, besides any extractions that might be necessary. The school pupils have not shown the slightest reluctance to having their teeth attended to. GENERAL AND PERSONAL ITEMS. Burglars paid a visit to the Iris tearooms in Broadway, Stratford, on Sunday night or yesterday morning, forcing one door and taking another off its hinges. Only a few pence were taken. Mr. B. J. Kilpatrick, of the Public Works staff at Stratford, left yesterday for Gisborne on transfer to the Public Works office there. His place at Stratford will be taken by C. N. Johnson, New Plymouth. On Saturday the members of the staff formally farewelled Mr. Kilpatrick, who was presented with a pair of brushes and a fountain pen. During the week-end five members of the staff of the King’s Theatre visited the Strafford side of Mt. Egmont equipped with a moving-picture camera. A number of “shots” of various beauty spots were made, the party being successful in securing several fine pictures of Curtis Falls. Old-time, modern and Scottish dances will constitute the programme for the Scottish Society’s social in the parish hall to-morrow night. No encore dancing will be allowed, as the programme is a long and varied one. Dancers must adhere to dances listed, and the committee is determined that patrons desiring to enjoy the old-time dances shall be given full opportunity of doing so. Boulton's orchestra will provide the musie. “THE WIZARD” AT THE KING’S. Fox Films’ absorbing mystery production, “The Wizard,” featuring Edmund Lowe and an excellent supporting cast, will be seen at the King’s Theatre, Stratford, to-night. Richard Reason, who has always been regarded as a master director of this sort of screen entertainment, is said to have made a heart-interest drama that will live for a long time as the best film.of the type. Leila Hyams has the feminine lead opposite Lowe. The story, based upon the play “Ralaoo,” by Gaston Leroux, was prepared for the screen by Harry O. Hoyt. The strong cast includes Gustav von Seyffertitz, Norman Trevor, E. H, Calvert, Barry Norton, Perle Marshall, Oscar Smith, Richard Frazier, Maude Turner Gordon and George Kofsonaros.
