AMERICAN TENNIS TOURNEY

POOR UMPIRING REGRETTED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. United Service. New York, Sept. 11. The Australian players have advanced two reasons for the character of their play during the recent American tournaments. Cummings informed the Australian Press Association that the question of climate and character of courts had strongly influenced their game. He said: “We had been here but a few short weeks and we had not yet had time to catch on to our game. Climate and courts would not trouble us after several months of tournaments. We would like to return next year to participate in the American matches.” Ilopman felt that the bad decisions of the American umpires negatived the best points of their play, and said: “I know it is silly to let an umpire’s bad rulings or failure to rule on close shots put you out, but I know it shakes my game up badly.” Crawford said that his match to-day with Gorchakoff had been made doubly difficult for him and *:Ts opponent by inaccurate or inefficient umpiring. The Australians sail by the Sonoma on September 17.
