RACING AT WANGANUI

SEASON'S FIRST CLASSIC FROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY’S EVENTS. REVIEW OF RECENT FORM.

(By

“Hurry On.”)

The first really important meeting of the flat racing season commences to-day with the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting. Big fields will contest each event, but with New Plymouth and Marton form to guide them punters should be close to the mark, though it is always well to remember that upsets are fairly common at this time of the year. Racing commences with the

Vpoko has plenty of pace and has been galloping well of late, and his failure at Marton must be discounted a good deal on account of the going. Teremoana, hailing from G. New’s stable, ran a good second at Dannevirke, and with R. Reed in the saddle is sure to be well in the market. Otaura Lass ran quite a good race at Marton. Foreign Fancy is endowed with tons of pace and will probably be benefited by her race last iveek. Marica only just failed to catch Dermod at Marton and is sure to be hard to beat. Vaux is an unknown quantity. So is Katuma. Black Maire ran a fair race at Marton. Irish Moss has no public form, nor has Lady Alophen. Baskier has been galloping well on the tracks. Cashier showed a lot of pace as a two-year-old and, coming from F. Tilley’s stable, he is sure to be in the favoured division. Black Odin will probably want the race. Skypoint has disappointed too often. The Warden shaped like a good one at Marton and as he has done well since it would occasion no surprise to see him start favourite. Mauriaena was a hot order that failed at Marton, and though that was not her true form the six furlongs may find her out. Summed up, The Warden, Cashier and Marica should go Well.

After his hollow win at Marton there is sure to be heavy support for the ton weight, and he should go well. Nevertheless he will find a hard job conceding Gaze a pound if the All Black gelding has done the right way since the National. If the going is heavy Brigadier Bill will come in for good support. Ballyfarnon is taking on a better class than he has been up against of late, but he is a pretty useful sort. Polyphemus is well, but does not stay too well. Kilburn ran a good race on the flat at Marton, and as he is well seasoned he should be prominent. Vexatious is a fair performer when well. Olympic and Beaumont will both be mneh improved by their outing last week. Troilus jumped well at Hawera the other morning and usually goes well on this course. Glengariff will need a race. This race bears a very open appearance, but Gaze, Cohesion and Troilus will not lack friends.

This is an exceptionally good field of hacks and wagering is sure to take a wide range. Singleton ran a great race at Marton after being well back in the early stages. Discourse is sure to be improved by his race last week. Pale Star has won four on end and will try to make it five. Gold Cure was a good thing beaten at Marton, and with a good horseman aboard would be very dangerous, but he usually is ridden by little known riders who do not handle him to advantage. Kawakina will probably need the race. Quarter Deck showed good form last autumn, but then went slightly amiss. If he is well forward he might take a lot of beating. Moorgas will need the race, and Vigilance docs not appeal. Flying Shot galloped well on Tuesday morning, and if the going is good he will go well. Calinthe carried the confidence of his connections at Marton, so he must have shown them something in private. Green Acre and Calamine do not appear to have much chance. Gold Cure, Singleton and Pale Star will most likely carry the money, but if a surprise is in store ft might be Flying Shot.

Even with his big impost that good horse King Lu is not out of it, but he will need to be well placed early. Partaga will go his usual honest race arid should be with them at the finish. Royal Game always has a chance in a race like this. Day Guard is a great beginner—a very useful asset on this course. Pangolin won so well at Marton that he will probably be favourite. Orazone went well for about a mile at Marton. Keddar is galloping well at Awapuni, and he can see the distance right out. Waltzer will be coupled with King Lu. Mendip showed a lot of promise last autumn but he is not a good beginner. Gardant was a winner at Dannevirke. Olympic will most likely start in the hurdles. Avro finished alongside Bisox just behind the place-getters in the White Memorial in Wellington, and a repetition of this form would make him dangerous. This is Te Koroke’s distance, and he displayed pace at Marton. Kilperon has not displayed much form of late. Lady Rose was a fair two-year-old. Auriculus goes well in heavy going. Whisogne won over this distance In New Plymouth, and Decoy Bird has been going well on the track. This race is also very open, but Avro, Partaga and Pangolin should all go well. Keddfir might bring off a surprise.

WANGANUI GUINEAS. One mile. ruU Feather S 10 Cyrille 8 5 Lucky Light 8 5 Baskier 8 5 Moutoa The Warden 8 5 Treasury 8 5 High Faintin' 8 5 Episode 8 5 Consent 8 5 Full Feather, by Autumnus —Equipment, Cyrille, by Humbug—Couranto. Baskier, by Archery —Murihiku. The Warden, by The Verderer —Sara Allgood. High Falutin’, by Grandcourt —Table Talk. Episode, by Limond —Homage. Consent, by Acre—Lucky. Moutoa Treasury, by Raper Money— Moutoa Ivanova, Lucky Night, by Paper Money —Simper. Full Feather carries 8.10 and all the rest 8.5. This is the first of the season’s classics, and the race will be watched with interest. Full Feather is reported to have wintered well and is expected to go a great race. Cyrille and Baskier are maidens, and so is The Warden, who will probably run in the maiden. High Falutin’ showed pace as a two-year-old and is well bred. Episode has performances above the rest and is likely to see a very short price. She is galloping great guns and is well forward. She will be ridden by B. 11. Morris. Consent, is only a moderate. Moutoa Treasury looks to be a most dangerous opponent for Episode, as the Paper Money filly is very fast and at Marton she showed that she has plenty of grit. Lucky Light won very easily at Hastings and should have improved since. Moutoa Treasury and Full Feather may be the ones to trouble Episode.

This field includes some smart hacks. Lady’s Boy, who- -heads- the list, also claims an engagement later in the day, but if started here should be prominent. Avoncourt is well forward, but he may need the race. Callanmore did not show up at Marton, hut galloped nicely at Awapuni on Saturday. Desert Lad may require a race. Banket showed plenty of pace as a two-year-old. Knightlike ran a great race at Marton and is sure to have an army of supporters. Holus Bolus can be passed over. White Ringlet is smart and will have the services of Reg. Mackie. Te Atiawa is a better horse now than he was at New Ply- ! mouth and his great beginning powers will be in his favour. Taurimu does not appeal, but Monsogne might go well. Swoopalong is one of Sir George Clifford’s team and has occasionally shown a fair turn of speed. Upoko will probably start in the maiden, and the others can be passed over. Te Atiawa, Knightlike and Lady’s Boy are a trio who can be depended upon to run well.

The distance will suit Paitonu, but he may require the race to sharpen him up. Nukumai is good under welter weights, but the welter season is now over. Black Mint is a good horse and a fit one. He should be with them at the finish. Valkon ran well at Marton and is rapidly coming to his best form. Vivo has had a couple of races and if the going is firm she would go well. Shining Armour is a horse in form, but the company is a bit rich. Queen Arch won at Marton and the distance today is again in her favour. Blimp will be favourite after his fine performance last week, but he was reported to be slightly shin sore on Saturday. He has probably shaken this off. Horomea won the Connollev last May and she might be prominent to-day. Royal Mint usually tails off in the early part of his races, but if he were to get a good run at the finish he would take no end of beating. Talisker is just such a one as may spring a surprise. He is a good horse. Bonogne and Catkin can be passed over, but Captain Gazeley ran a great raee to the turn at Marton and would probably be improved by the outing. When the machine has closed it will probably be found that Blimp has most supporters, with good money for Valkon and Horomea.

This is a great field and reads more like a Stewards’ Handicap than a £3OO flutter. The two top weights, Reremoana and The Hawk, will both be improved by the outing, but Kiosk had a race at Marton and ought to be ready. Benzora has not been long in work, but if King Lu were reserved for this race he would be well supported. Laughing Prince would be better suited by a longer distance, and so would Star Stranger. With a light weight aboard Arrow Lad is always dangerous. Tea Time is galloping so well that he is certain to be well fancied. Goshawk will need the race. Limited seems a light of other days. The three-year-old Staehnnter is in great fettle and with only 7.9 to carry may be hard to beat, ft is said that ho does not begin too well, and this will be against him. Oration is very fit and if he draws a decent marble he should be with them. Ruffles is on the improve but may require a little more time; Day Guard will most likely start in the seven furlongs event. Broad Acre is not quite ready. Bonogne can be passed over, and so can Helotis, but, if reserved, Lady’s Boy would go well; in faet, he would be one of the hardest to beat. Town Bird is galloping well and Starboard Light made an exhibition of a field at Dannevirke. Sagittarius will go his usual good race. This is a hard race and at least ten horses hare a winning chance, but Tea Time, Staghunter, Oration and Lady’s Boy (if reserved) should go well. WANGANUI PREPARATIONS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Sept. 12. The weather was fine for the final gallops. Talisker ran the last half mile of a round in 52 2-5 sec. Catkin ran half a-mile in 51sce.

George, Horomea in charge of R. Johnson, Te Atiawa in charge of J. O’Neill and Flying Shot. By the morning trains from Hawera the bulk of the Hawera contingent left for Wanganui. Brown has just taken in hand a eouple of nice looking youngsters owned by Mr. A. Alexander, of New Plymouth. They are a two-year-old full sister to Te Atiawa, by Chief Ruler—Wake Up, and a two-year-old full brother to Silver Rule, by Chief Ruler—Silver Link. TARANAKI TROTTING CLUB. THE ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Taranaki Trotting Club states, intel’ alia:— The accounts for the year show a profit of £l6O 2s 3d compared with a loss of £24 9s IDd last year, which, up to a point, shows the results between a wet and a line day. On the expenditure side there is an increase of £l2O, which is accounted for by the increase of stakes £45, the purchase of a cup, which the club had to secure this year, and the increase of rent for the course. Subscriptions show a substantial increase, and the club is grateful for the support given. It is interesting to peruse the 1 accounts for the past four years to show how the meeting is proving popular with owners and trainers and ths public. Nominations and acceptances ; are as follow: 1925, £391 10s; 1926, ’ £340; 1927, £3SS 10s; 1928, £430. Stakes: 1925, £745; 1926, £1050; 1927, £1105; 1928, £ll5O. The totalisator each year (except 1927, which was a very wet day) has shown a decided increase. The programme each year has been slightly altered and. times improved. ] These adjustments have been dealt with by the committee on suggestions made ' by those closely interested in the sport, The committee lias applied for and j been granted April 6, 1929, on which to , hold the next meeting, and with the . financial position looking so much , brighter, given a fine day, the club j should again show a decided increase.
