BOY SCOUTS’ PROGRESS. The annual meeting of the Eltham Boy Scout committee was held on Friday evening. Mr. Bridger presided and there were also present Messrs. R. H. Gover, M. Bourke, H. B. Hastings, Mesdames Gover, Bourke and Hastings. It was regretted that it was not at present po ible to procure the services of a suitable scoutmaster; the Eltham troop had had to lapse for the want of leadership. The annual report made reference to the • arious difficulties that had to be contended with during the year as far as the scout troop was concerned. The report in connection with the cubs said some useful work was being carried out under the leadership of Cubmaster Townsend. The balance-sheet allowed a credit of £l2 7s 7d.
For the ensuing year Mr. M. Bourke was elected president, the Rev. W. W. Avery vice-president, and Mr. R. J. Harrison honorary secretary and treasurer. The general committee appointed was Messrs. I. J. Bridger, R. H. Gover, H. B. Hastings, E. Townsend, the Rev. Whitacre, Mesdames Gover, Bourke, D. Syme, C. W. Whitacre and J. Williams. Thanks were accorded Mr. Bridger for his many services to tho movement. Mr. Harrison was thanked for his work as secretary. GENERAL ITEMS. A total value of £1995 in building permits was issued by the Eltham Borough Council during the month of August. . Owing to the scarcity of prime killable beasts the Eltham butchers have raised the retail price of meat. The committee responsible for the organising of the old-time dances in the parish hall is continuing the series. Last Wednesday another successful evening was spent. Large numbers were present, sent.
The monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held last week. There was a large attendance of members. Mr. Farrell, h ad teacher of the Mangatoki school, gave an interesting address on "What Parents can do for the School.” Much information was given by Mr. Farnell. He pointed out the immense help that parents could be to teachers in the educating of children. Mesdames A. V. Tait and Avery returned to Eltham on Saturday evening after attending the Plunket conference-
