OHILDON ' FANCY DRESS BALL.

For 13 years in succession Otakeho has had one night annually devoted to a fancy dress parade for the children of the district. This year’s function was in many ways about the best held. The funds are to be devoted to the school library fund. Air. 11. J. Eaves thanked all present for helping, all who had assist I in ths organisation, and the donors of the special prizes, the judges, and all others who had co-operated to secure success. The promoters were led by Alias A. White (hon. secretary), Airs, Eaves (head of committee), Mrs. Evans (head mistress), while Airs. Mudford played excellent music for the dances.

The little ones thoroughly enjoyed themselves and made the hall look very gay and pretty. The awards were as follow:—-Under 5 years, boy, B. Langley (rabbit); girl, Al. Putt (Christmas Tree); specials, E. Twindie (bride), N. Campbell (clown). Under 10 years, girl, J. AlcVinnie (wedding cake); boy, J. Wood (Eastern Prince); N. Wood (dancing girl) and E. Burke (ancient Greek) were given second prizes and J. Walker (sweet lavender) and W. io Fleming (Maori boy), special prizes. Under 15 years, girls, J. McCullum (winter) 1, K. Campbell (Britannia) 2; boys, T. Edwards (Indian) 1, C. Campbell (Kaupokonui Dairy Company) 2; Specials, girl, H. Nicholls (house for sale); boy, R. Meek (’Chinese). A special prize was given by Air. A. M. Hannah for babies to B. Langley (rabbit), by Mr. Thomson (New Plymouth), under 15, to H. Ruskin (butterfly) and F. Edwards (nigger minstrel) Specials were also given by Mrs. Robb, Mrs. Good and Air. Braid.

Nicholls (house for sale), B. AlcVinnie (clown), E. Bridgeman (window), W. Ruskin (wasp), W. Julian (rose bud), P. Brown (Prince Arthur), A. Brown (bandsman), J. Alourie (gollywog), P. Campbell (Kaupokonui Dairy Company), The judges (Mesdames Robb and Good of Hawera) were very pleased with the display, and said it was one of the best they had seen, the winning costumes being particularly good. HALL SOCIETY ANNUAL .MEETING

There was a fair attendance of members of the hall committee at the annual meeting , Air. E. R. Putt presiding. The receipts were £69 17s 2d and expenditure £67 17s 4d, leaving a credit balance of £1 19s lOd. The outstanding accounts totalled £4 7s 6d, bringing the credit balance to £6 7s 4d, which was considered very satisfactory, as the expenditure had again been considerable. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr. E. R. Putt; deputy chairman. Mr. L. S. Mackie; secretary, Mr. T. W. Eaves; committee, Messrs. S. le Fleming, H. J. Eaves, P. Edwards, E. T. Burke, F. Verry, L. Mudford, R. Jones, and W. P. Herbert; auditors. Air. C. A. Burke and Air. E. Wills. EUCHRE PARTIES. During the past month the committee of the hall society has held three euchre parties. Although the attendances at each of the respective parties have been exceptionally small, the society has derived a small profit from them. The prize winners were: —No. 1 party: Ladies, Mrs. L. Mudford; gents., Mr. E. R. Putt. No. 2 party: Ladies, Miss C. McCrae; gents., Mr. H. Baylis. No. 3 party:’ Ladies, iMss F. Davies: gents. Mr. A. Cate. The grand Ball, which takes place in the local hall on Wednesday. July 4 promises to be a most successful function. The ladies’ committee in charge is sparing no pains to make the evening a success. The services of Boulton s professional orchestra have been pio cured, while the quality of the supper Is well known to dance patrons. The proceeds are to be given to the nan ■moiety towards the kitchen extension, which is a long needed addition. The Farmers’ Ball, held under the auspices of the Otakeho farmers Association on Friday, June 15, was a huge success, farmers and others being present from many parts of the disThe music, which was supplied by Air Wood’s orchestra, Was of the best, while the supper, which was in the hands of a strong ladies' committee, left nothing to be desired. The success attained by this initial function will no doubt cause it to be made an annual one. CEMETERY BOARD. The local cemetery board is no doubt to many residents of this district an undiscussed or non-existing body, but the good wort; that has been done to the cemetery during the past year shows that the local board is a very active body. The trees planted two years ago have made wonderful growth and show every sign of developing into valuable tinnier, while the once overgrown hayfieW now presents the appearance of a well cared for cemetery. A mooting of the cemetery boat (I was held recently, when various affairs were dealt with.

The results of the recent matches r.'aved by Hie ladies’ and men's hockey clubs in ’the Wednesday division of the Taranaki Hocker Association Competitions are sufficient proof of the great enthusiasm Unit is being shown by the respective players. The performances of the wen’s A and B teams and the .ladies' team in the recent five-a-side in Hawera are worthy of mention, the ladies' team reaching the semi-final

The following are the results of the matches played by the ladies’ team in the Taranaki Hockey Association’s Saturday competition:—Otakeho 3 v. Eltham 1; Otakeho 1 v. Hawera “Ramblers” 0; Otakeho I v. Alanaia 2; Otakeho 2 v. Pihama 0. * The club extends its congratulations to Alessrs. C. Davies, G. Surgenor, W. Herbert and P. Edwards on being chosen to play in the first trial game for the selection of players for the Taranaki hockey representatives. “BOBBY" CALVES. There was an excellent attendance of farmers of Otakeho -and district in tho hall recently when Air. C. Dickie, chairman of directors of the Patea Freezing Company, addressed them on the subject of “bobby” calves on lines similar to those given at his previous meetings. Air. Edwin Burke was in the chair, and after some discussion it was agreed that a pool be formed, and all present agreed to send their calves to the Patea works. PERSONAL. The Otakeho school committee has had only two chairman in a',nut 30 years. Sir William le Fleming acted in that capacity for 1(1 years, and Air. H. J. Eaves fallowed him for about the same period. Now it is fitting that they should be succeeded by Mr. S. If. le Fleming, a son of Sir William. At the annual meeting of householders at Otakeho it was mentioned that Mr. 11. J. Eaves had been chairman of the school committee for about 16 years, and that Mr. L. S. Mackie had been secretary for many years during the same period. Neither of them sought re-election this year, and the meeting therefore had to regretfully accept their decision. Hearty appreciation of the good work done, by both Mr. Eaves and Mr. Alackie was expressed. Sir Wiliam le Fleming and Lady le Fleming, accompanied by their daughter. Miss Fanny le Fleming, have returned from New Plymouth. Airs. Donald Alackie. of Australia, was the recent guest of Air. and Mrs. L. S. Mackie.

Mrs. A. Lawrie has returned from Auckland.

Mr. A. S. Herbert has returned from Christchurch.

Mr. J. Surgenor has returned from Christchurch. Phyllis Davies, youngest daughter of Air. and Airs. C, Davies, had the misfortune to break her arm whilst playing at school recently. Residents will be pleased to hear that her position is much improved. Airs. Raymond Jones passed through tho district a few days ago.

The sympathy of the district is extended to Air. and Airs. Cuthbert in the recent sad loss of their infant daughter. Airs. O'Brien and grandson, of Wanganui, were the guests of Airs. A. Fraser. Airs. L. S. Alackie is at present not enjoying the best of health. Her many friends wish her a speedy recovery. Aliss Mildred Jenkins is spending a short holiday in Wanganui.

Aliss C. Atoyes has returned to New Plymouth. Mrs. J. Thatcher has returned to Arapuni. Miss Molly Burke is paying a short visit to Wanganui. Air. and Mrs. C. Haynes, accompanied by Aliss Jean Campbell, have motored through to Wellington. Air. and Mrs. W. H. Corkill have motored through to Auckland.

Aliss Mara Alackie has returned from Wellington. Mrs. L. S. Mackie recently spent, a short holiday in Waverly. Aliss D. Byrne has returned from Auckland.

Airs. F. Surgenor and daughter, of Greymouth, were the recent guests of Mrs. W. Surgenor. Air. J. Pettigrew senr. recently spent a short holiday with Air. J. A. Pettigrew. Mr. L. G. Mudford and Air. J. Sanders have returned from a short motor tour.

Airs. E. R. Putt is spending a short holiday with her daughter, Airs. JThatcher.
