DAIRY FACTORY PRODUCTS

TARANAKI WINTER SHOW AWARDS CLASSES FOR BUTTER AND CHEESE LARGE ENTRIES: KEEN COMPETITION Row upon row of round cheese arranged in tiers and shelves of the choicest butter New Zealand can produce now grace the dairy hall of the Taranaki Metropolitan Winter Show to bo opened officially at 3.15 p.m. to-day by' the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson. Large entries from factories in Tara naki and other parts of the Dominion have again proved the growing popularity of the annual competitions in New Plymouth. The Levin Co-operative Dairy Factory has retained the points prize for butter in the face of keen competition from Mangorei and Karamea. Ilopelands has secured the corresponding award for cheese, with Ngaere and Lowgarth not far behind. Ngaere won the pedestal clock for the cheese aggregate among Taranaki factories.

LEVIN AGAIN IN F2ONT j CHAMPIONSHIP AND POINTS PRIZE HOPELANDS LEADING IN CHEESE. Awards for dairy produce exhibited at the Taranaki winter show were made yesterday. Though the Levin factory won the points prize for butter and again annexed the agricultural society’s championship cup, it could not repel the challenge for the Joseph Nathan Cup. and was narrowly- beaten in this class by United and Shannon. United previously won the cup in 1925. Mangorei narrowly defeated Masterton and Karamea for the trophy offered by the Factory Managers' Association. With little to spare, Lepperton secured the Commonwealth and Dominion Line’s eiip for; Taranaki factories, thus winning it ; twice in succession. Mangorei, a former : holder, and Moa Farmers were second j and third respectively and North Tara- j naki was fourth. Hopelands gained a three-point win ; in the cheese points prize, besides secnr- , ing the Shaw, Savill championship cup, winning the society’s competition - for a j case of medium cheese and being run- l ner-up in the class for three loaf cheese. Ngaere, second for the points prize, won the open closs for two full-cream Cheddar cheese, Hopeland* being second and Lowgarth third. Lowgarth was half a point ahead of Ngaere and a point ahead of Pembroke for the Taranaki championship. Commenting on the quality of the j butter, the judges said that the flavour on the whole was very satisfactory, only a very few exhibits not having withstood the test of time. The body was quite up to the usual high stand- | ard. In class I, for butter taken from I the grading store, there was a lament- I able lack of care in packing, and in this connection they asked managers to see that each block was made solid.

The quality of the cheese was generally very good, with the exception of one or two exhibits in which the flavour' had gone off slightly. The winning entries were of exceptionally good flavour and make, the flavour being' clean, and the body close and meaty. A few exhibits, suffered in comparison with the others owing to a slight excess of acid. The cheese was staged in an attractive condition, the finish being neat, and the rinds free from mould. Entries were not numerous, but the quality and general appearance reflected credit firstly on the producers of the raw material, and secondly on the manufacturers. The officials in the butter and cheese section were as follow: Judges, graders’ service; stewards, Messrs. H. H. Olson (supervisor), R. Scott, J. H. Bagley, and L. G. Andrews.
