OPUNAKE BAND CARNIVAL

TUG -OF WAR TOU RN A MEN T. Four 13-stone and four 10-stone teams are competing in the tug-of-war tournament which opened in the Opunake Town Hall last night as one of the attractions of the carnival by which the Opunake Band seeks to improve its financial position. In the light teams’ competition Arawhata No. 1 won from Arawhata No, 2 by 1} inches and Awatuna won from Waiteika by 2J inches. In the heavyweights Arawhata won from Eltham B by 1} inches and Awatuna won from Opunake by six inches. All were good pulls, though Awatuna beat Opunake rather easily. The t light teams are:—

Arawhata No. I.—Robinson, Woolford, Suchman (2), and Simpson.

Arawhata No. 2.—Gilshnan (2), Simpson, Dobbin and Clegg. Waiteika. —Butcher, Jooney, Chisholm, Crofsky and Thompson. Awatuna. —Hestiand, Pope, Johnson, Lind and Hill. '■

The heavy teams arc:—• Eltham B. —McKay, Roebuck, Revell (2), Southard.

Arawhata.—Cooper, Clegg (2), J. Lusk and R. Lusk.

Awatuna. —Maindonald (2), Castles, Smith and Hill.

Opunake.—W. Hohaia, Mcßeynolds, Maindonald, Whalen, Davey. The tournament will continue to-day and the finals will be pulled to-morrow. A feature of the tournament is the admirable starting and judging apparatus invented by Mr. A. H. Russell, of Eltham.

A team from the band will pull a team representing the business men today for a stake of £2O. The band team is J. Trotter, A. Pollock, P. Newport, H. Parkes, C. Maindonald, Woolford (captain), and the business men’s team is C. Clare, W. Macßone, F. Boyd, W. Hodgson, J. Crofskey, J. Moron (captain). A fancy dress football match will be played in the recreation grounds at 2.30 to-day between teams representing the band and the business men.

Side-shows and stalls have brought additional funds to the band, good business being done by them among the crowds which gathered for the tug-of-war.
