ROOT-GROWING COMPETITIONS. THE JUDGING COMMENCES. Judging of the plots in connection with the competitions held under the auspices of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs in North Taranaki was commenced yesterday, the judges being Messrs. R. G. Ridling, Dill-Mackay (agricultural instructors under the Education Board), J. M. Smith (fields division ol the Agricultural Department) and A. T. Moore. They visited Oaonui, Rahotu and Warea. In all five plots of mangolds and five ot clion-mollier were judged, this being the first year in which there has been a competition in connection with the latter fodder. There was one entry each in the Oaonui and Ranotu districts, in each case plots of mangolds, at Oaonui in tho school ground, and at Rahotu on the Tipoka Road. At Warea there were eio-ht entries, two of mangolds and four of" chor-niollier, at the school, one of mangolds on the Stuart Road and one ot chou-inollier on the V area Road. Points are allocated for the weight at the crop, quality and cultivation, and also for charts. Yesterday the crops were weighed and the allocation made ot quality and cultivation points, but as the charts have yet to be judged betore the final results can be made up no figures are yet available. There can be no question as to the educational rWantages of the competition, particu’ irly where the plots were grown at the school, as the judges were able Io demonstrate not only to the owners of the plots but also to all the other senior pupils the causes for the success or failure of the crops, and the keen interest taken by tho children
