MASQUERADE AT OMATA

OPENING OF THE SOCIAL SEASON. Omata had its night of nights on Thursday when, in the presence of a large crowd, the first ball of the season was held at the Public Hall. Always ?n event outstanding in its popularity with townspeople, this year’s function, which took the form of a masquerade and which attracted some 300 dancers, has even eclipsed all previous records. This is in spite of the fact that the' committee once more experienced its proverbial bad luck with the weather. The building presented a gay spectacle throughout the evening, features of which were the grand march of the masqueraders in fancy costume, the excellent music from McNeill’s novelty orchestra, and the splendid floor, notwithstanding the prevailing dampness. Good feeling and jollity were preeminent throughout the evening. The judging of the costumes was in the capable hands of Mrs. D. Blackley (New Plymouth), who made the following awards: —■ Ladies’ Fancy.—Mrs. L. Hare (Miss If 00). Ladies’ Original.—Miss M. Richards (Jazz Band). Men’s Fancy. —Mr. G. Beck (Plunket Baby). Men’s Original.—Mr. I. Watkins (Glad Eye). Specials.—Miss Randall (Spanish Lady); Miss R. Griffiths (What is it?); Mr. W. H. Fremantle (Dutchman); and little Peace Gilmour (Victorian Lady). Without doubt credit for the great success achieved was in a great measure due to the tireless energy of the ladies who comprised the committee in charge of the excellent supper arrangements and the society's executive which had control of the general preparations. The committees responsible for the enjoyable occasion were: Mesdames E. R. Bayly, L. A. McHardie, W. Mace, L. Hart, J. Jury, E. Andrews, M. Reynolds, V. Freemantle, A. J. Luxton, H. N. Bayly, H. Kendall, R. G. Knapman, H. B. Mace, S. Vickers, D. Penwarden, and Misses E. Grey and B. Pease. The men’s committee comprised Messrs. W. Mace, E. Luxton, L. Penwarden, R. G. Knapman, V. Freemantlq H. W. Bayly, B. W. Bayly, and H. N. Eayly (secretary) and R. C. Stanton (treasurer).
