UNLICENSED MOTOR-CARS

SEVENTY DEFENDANTS FINED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Seventy owners of motor vehicles were charged before J.’sP. to-day with having unlicensed cars. The majority were fined 5s and 10s, and one £l. The defence in each case was that they had gone to the Town Hall on or before March 31, but had been unable to obtain licenses owing to the enormous number of applicants. The police said most Wellington motorists had waited until the last minute to get their licenses. Counsel protested against the cases being held pending the decision of the legal point regarding the validity of the licenses, but the J.’sP. refused to adjourn any case in which the defendant pleaded guilty.
