MEN’S HOCKEY COMPETITION
MANGATOKI 4 v. OTAKEHO I. Mangatoki played Otakeho on Wednesday at Mangatoki. After a good, keen game played in excellent spirit, Mangatoki proved victorious by four goals to one. The home team played with good combination, and outshone their opponents individually also. Notwithstanding these facts Otakeho played a fast, keen game from start to finish and kept their stronger opponents on the run and at times put their defence to severe tests. Mangatoki missed several fairly easy chances to goal in the first ten minutes, but thereafter had to fight hard to win. From close play in the goal mouth Sherin scored the first goal tor
Mangatoki, who attacked strongly right through the spell, which ended I—o. Otakeho fought hard to equalise from the bully off, but Mangatoki’s defence proved too sound, and the play moved rapidly from goal to goal. Thompson scored a good goal for Mangatoki after a strong attack in which he was always prominent. Mangatoki again attacked strongly, but Bennie’s shot went over the top of the net. Otakeho livened up and carried play into the circle. J. Surgean, finding a weak spot in the defence, netted a good goal for Otakeho. The game livened up, Free goaling from a hard stru.wwle in the circle. Otakeho fought hard to save the game, but Mangatoki quickly turned defence into attack, A. McGinnes (goalie) getting in powerful hits. The - final goal was scored by Gernhoefer from a good combined attack. The game ended: Mangatoki 4, Otakeho 1.
Mr. Keith Pennington proved a very efficient referee.
