OUR SWEET-MAKING CORNER.

SUGAR STICKS. It is great fun making sugar sticks, children, but you must not be afraid of burning your fingers just a little. Put a pound of lump sugar into a saucepan with half a glass of cold water; stir, and bring slowly to the boil. When the sugar has dissolved, and the syrup is boiling, add a good teaspoonful of vinegar; stir, then add a tablespoonful of honey. Continue stirring, and when the syrup becomes a light golden brown pour it on to a well buttered dish. Take a buttered knife, turn tho edges of the toffee over, making it into a compact mass, and keep on doing this till you can touch it. • Now pull it with your fingers, roll it, and finally twist it into sticks. To make the sticks even, cut off the ends with a pair of scissors, and roll these ends into sweets. FORGET IT. If you see a tall fellow ahead of a crowd, A leader of men marching fearless and proud, And you know of a tale whoso mere telling aloud Would cause his proud head in grief to be bowed, It’s a pretty good plan to forget it If you know of a skeleton hidden away In a closet, guarded, and kept from tho day In the dark: and whose showing, whose sudden display, Would cause grief and sorrow, ami life long dismay, It’s a pretty good plan to forget it. If you know of a thing that will darken tho joy Of a man or a woman, a girl or a boy,That will wipe out a smile or least way annoy A fellow, or cause any gladness to cloy. 't's a p>.'t:y good plan to forget it.
