WHAT HAPPENED TO MARIQUITA.
Mariquita didn’t know where she was going; she was quite, quite lost. And in such an amazing country too! She didn’t think she would ever be able to find her way home, and, for some peculiar reason, she didn't mind a bit. But all the same she cried softly to herself as she walked on. As a matter of fact, she didn’t exactly walk! She clambered among vines on which there were thousands of bundles of little M grapes. And Mariquita ate, and ats, and ate; she was quite glad there W'as nobody to see her. ‘‘How lovely to be a little black grape,’’ sighed Mariquita. No sooner had she spoken the words than she was a little black grape! She tried to wriggle off the bunch, but her stalk held her tight, and she became hotter and hotter- as the sun burnt her. “Oh. what will become of me!” wept Mariquita. “Currants,” said a voice. “Currants!” cried Mariquita. “I never heard of such a thing!” “Perhaps not, but that doesn’t matter,” said the voice. It didn’t, because Mariquita was a currant! “Oh,” moaned poor Mariquita, “What trill become of me?” "Cake,” said the voice. “No!” cried Mariquita. “I won't be eaten. Oh, this is dreadful! Let me go home! I’m onlv Mariquita really, and I’m—” "Dreaming,” said Mother's voice. “Oh, Mariquita. I told yon you ate too much cake at the party. This is nightmare.” Children, remember poor Mariquita When you are offered a third cake! COBDE DU DOI. Probably most of you boys have had Sults made of corduroy at some time or ether. But I doubt whether tho material of to-day is as good as it was in the old days.
