KAPONGA NEWS

GENERAL ITEMS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A special meeting of members of the lire brigade was held on Wednesday evening to meet delegates from the brass band to arrange a farewell evening to Mr. P. Thoumine, who has been a prominent member of both these institutions. After some • discussion the piomoters decided on a public farewell to take place in the Town Hall, probably on May 25. It was felt that there were doubtless many other friends cutside these two institutions who would like to join in the farewell. A small committee was formed to make all arrangements.

Although the dance at Kapuni under the auspices of the Oddfellows’ Lodge On Tuesday evening was not as largely attended as a similar one held last year, the 50 to 60 couples present spent an enjoyable time to music supplied by Boulton's orchestra. Visitors were present from the Hawera and Manaia lodges, as well as other visitors from Stratford, Eltham and the Surrounding district. The duties of M.C. were capably carried out by Mr. A. Melville throughout a lengthy programme of new and old-time dances. The supper arrangements under the charge of sister members of the lodge, assisted by brother members, as well as a number of their wives, left little to be desired. The door takings amounted to £l3.

At an executive committee meeting of the Brass Band, held at the conclusion of practice on Tuesday night, the resignation of Mr. P. Thoumine as bandmaster and conductor was accepted with regret. He resigned owing to his departure from the district. It was unanimously decided that Mr. W. Kear, of Stratford, who was present at the meeting by request, be appointed as bandmaster and conductor, he haying signified his willingness to do so if it was the wish of members. PERSONAL. Mr. L. Des Forges, of New Plymouth, is spending the school vacation with friends in Kaponga. Mr. and Mrs. C. Tonkin and youngest daughter Pat are on a holiday visit to Auckland. Word was received on Wednesday that Mr. B. L. Webby, of Riverlea, who has been seriously ill for the last few months, had died at the Hawera BoeIpital. The funeral will take place today.
