Captain W. Waller, harbourmaster at New Plymouth, will take a holiday ns from Monday next. Bishop Cherrington, when at Inglewood to-night, will institute the Rev. J. M. Thompson as vicar of the parish. Mr. W. J. Jarman, who has been chief clerk at the New Plymouth railway station, left yesterday morning to taka up a similar position at Invercargill. The death occurred in Cornwall in January of Mr. Arnold Mellow, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. T. B. Mellow, of Kaponga. H© left for th© war with the Sixth Reinforcements, and, after getting Iris discharge in the Dominion, returned to England, where he married and settled in Cornwall. He leaves a wife and three young children. Mr. R. C. Mellow, of Eltham Road, Kaponga, is a brother. His death was due to the effects of the war. The death has occurred at Matamata of Mr, Crosdell Brindle, a veteran of the Maori Wars, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Brindle, who had been farming at Matamatafor 20 years, joined the transport service of the 3rd Waikato Regiment at the ag© of 17, and saw service in Taranaki, Wanganui and the Waikato. He was awarded the Maori War Medal and recently the King’s Empire Veterans’ Medal. He was a non-srflokcr and a teetotaller, and never had a day’s sickness until about eight years ago. Prior to taking up farming at Matamata, he had also farmed at Cambridge and Gordon.
