RED CROSS SECRETARY

VISIT OF GENERAL OHAMPAIN. Brigadier-General H. B. Cbampain, C.M.G., secretary-general oi the British Red Cross Society and delegate of the league of Red Croce societies, arrived in New Plymouth last night, accompanied by his wife and two daughters. This evening he will be tendered a reception at the Victoria League rooms, and tomorrow morning he leave* for the Waitomo Caves, via the Awakino Valley. General Champain hag had a distinguished career. His military service dates from 1891, when he served with Gurkha Rifles on the north-west frontier of India. He was employed on special duty with Lord Curzon at the Coronation Durball, Delhi, in 1902, and was subsequently A.D.C. to the Lieutenant-Gov-ernor of Burma and military secretary to Lord Carmichael, Governor of Madras and of Bengal. During the Great War he commanded a battalion of Gurkhas first in France, then in Gallipoli. He was invalided home from Egypt, and later commanded a brigade in Mespotamia. After the Armistice he commanded the British Forces in North. Persia, for two years, for a great portion of the time being opposed to the Bolshevik's.

General Champain wae appoint A Secretary-General of the British Red Cross Society in 1921. He m vigiting New Zealand in this capacity, and alio a« delegate from the League of Red Cross Societies.
