TARANAKI J.C. RACES

THE PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY SOME GOOD RACING PROMISED. REVIEW OF THE ACCEPTANCES. (By "Motunoa.”) The ■ Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting will be concluded to-day, the principal events being the Taranaki | Stakes, the Paul Memorial Handicap, ! and the Stewards' Handicap. The fields : are very good on the whole, handicaps : attracting an average of eight, including most of the best performers on the first day, as well as several fresh ones which have raced consistently at earlier meetings. Tire field in the Taranaki Stakes will be a small but select one, and will be i a great attraction if The Hawk (last • year’s winner) is produced against the | Taranaki crack sprinter, Reremoana. Fine I weather and a good, firm racing track can be relied upon, and the attendance ! of the public promises to be again very | large. J Racing commences at noon with the OKOKE HURDLES HANDICAP. 17?* milrfi .nd a half and lOOvds.

The eight acceptors include the three placed horses on Thursday, Powhiri having been raised lllbs, Airtight slbs, and San iFera lib, which appears to be equitable. Elysianor, who finished fourth, has ■been dropped 2M». Powhiri’s winning margin on Thursday was half a length, but it seemed as if he could have increased the distance if necessary, and he may again finish in front of Airtight. .San Fera stopped badly at the finish of Thursday's race, and it does not appear that his staying powers have been materially improved. Elysianor’® running on the first day was very disappointing to his party, for he had been galloping well, and schooled in bold style before leaving Wanganui. To-day he meets Powhiri on 131bs 'better terms, which should bring them closer together, though the records show that Elysianor generally races best “first up.” Neither Flowing Bowl nor Royal Flight impressed on the first day, but the first-named was running on at the finish. The newcomers in to-day’s races are Mountain Bell and Hymbreat. The former shaped poorly at Hawera, but Hymgreat ran well for a mile and a-quarter, and may go further to-day. Probably Powhiri will be sent out favourite to-day, and danger may come from Airtight and Hymgreat.

The scratching pen having accounted for Goshawk, Royal Acre, Baby Bun and several lesser lights, the following remain in the

Six of the seven engaged appear to have reasonable prospects, and an interesting race is assured. The .Swell ran second in open company with 8.2, and should be quite capable of doing himself justice amongst hacks, even with 9sj. Lady Killer met and defeated the rest in the Okato Hack Handicap on Thursday, but 'Sovena ran her to the narrowest of margins, and the handicapper has raised each 91bs, Sovena’s rider having 41bs allowance then, which may now be increased to 51bs. Always has been raised lib, and Miss Mercia let off a similar amount Opinions regarding the first day's race are likely to differ, both horses covering a lot of ground, though Sovena’s wide detour on the home bend was probably noticed by more than Lady Killer’s bad passage leaving the straight. Always ran gamely, but was knocked out chasing Miss Mercia between the five furlongs post and the home turn. As regards Miss Mercia, she failed to run on as expected, being made a lot of use of in the middle stages. Flying Shot and Resin would require to improve a lot to have a chance. Summed up, the dangerous division may include The Swell, Lady Killer and Sovena, and, at the weights the public may find it hard to separate Lady Killer and .Sovena. There ie ample "quality” to provide a great race in the STEWARDS’ HANDICAP.' 275 sovs. Six furlongs. Kiosk 9 2 Melissa 7 3 Lady Sarchee 7 0 Cavendish 9 2 Sea Star ' 0 Oration 7 10 Oreade® 7 0 Tip Tree 7 9 Quillbre 7 0 High Finance 7 5 Kiosk did not run up to his usual form in the Flying Handicap on the first day, finishing fourth, and Mr. Coyle has let him down lib. Lady Cavendish has gone up lOlbs, and 9.2 may stop her "run.” Oration was weighted at 7.10 the first day, and carried 7.134, and although very sore, ran a fair fifth. Tip Tree, who was unlucky to miss second place, is handicapped 31bs higher, and cannot be regarded as badly treated. I High Finance, let down a pound, will I still have to carry the same weight with T. Green up. Her showing on Thursday was wretched, and she is capable of better things. Melissa • is not built on weight-carrying lines, and will appreciate the drop from 9.5 (in hack company) to 7.3 (amongst the open horses).. Sarchee is a fresh horse whose form has not been good lately, and the rest of the 7st division may also be outclassed. As the field now stands, it presents a difficult problem, but it is safe- to say that Tip Tree will have a much larger following to-day, but whether he will prove equal to defeating the two topI weights remains to be seen. I It is problematic how many horses I will go to the post for the lassie event of the meeting, but the position now stands, like this: -FOURTEENTH TARANAKI STAKES. 5W sovs. Six furlongs. Kiosk 9 10 Sarchee 8 7 Keremoaoa 9 3 High Finance 8 4 The Hawk 9 0 T e Atiawa 7 0 Ladv Tic Miss 6 11 Cavendish 8 31 Quality, rather ilia:: quantity, is always desired in these the best b.0..-e.- then being given a fair run, and the public will be provided with a “thriller'’ ;i Reremoana, The Hawk, r.ad the best of the two-year-olds go to ’.he post. On Awapuni running Kiosk would have little chance of beating Reremoana at a difference of 71bs, but with The Hawk. in the race, Beremoana’s task is more difficult. If reserved, Lady Caverdirii should go well, though' track

I gallops with Reremoana suggest that her hig half-brother will have no -difficulty in conceding her 6lbs. Sarchee and High Finance will not be fancied I at the weights, and Te Atiawa and Tea I Miss do not appear to be up to classic I company. Whatever the strength of the opposition, it is certain that Reremoana will be sent out a very warm favourite, ; and a victory for the wonderful son of Hallowmas and Bonny Portland would' be very popular. In past years young horses have had a good deal to -say in the settlement of the Taranaki Stakes, Flying Shot, Estland and Finmark winning as two-year-olds, and Motley at three and four years, as well as Silver Link and Rational at the latter age. The mighty Gloaming won at five and six years; the almost equally great Desert Gold at six years; and two aged horses, Glentruin and The Hawk. -Desert Gold and Motley share the time re-eord for the race, Irain 13sec, and fresh figures may be hoisted to-day. Then follows the

Of the above eight, four met in the Cup race on Thursday, but the shorter distance may discount that form. Eden Hall (third) has gone up 31bs; and Yoma (second) 81bs; while Transformer and Mint Leaf carry the same weights. Tiega and Manly have been promoted to better company, and Orazone and Wenday are newcomers. Orazone, carrying 7.1 J, won over the same distance at Hawera, Yoma (8.8) being third. To-day there is a stone between them, and the older horse may have improved more in the meantime. Eden Hall, Yoma, Orazone and Transformer must all, go well. Tiega, with 201'bs off his back, might run a good race. Although snot up against, much on Thursday, he finished like a stayer. An open race, which should see spirited betting, may give the judge an opportunity of deciding between Yoma, Orazone and Etfen Hall. A weak lot figure in the URENUI ELECTRIC.

Yawl showed pace for five furlongs on' Thursday, and should go ’better over five than six. Resinous looks well amongst the others. Some smart two-year-olds .will he produced in the PARITUTU JUVENILE HANDICAP.

Gold Dawn is also engaged in the Omata Hack Handicap. Tea Miss has been raised 41bs for her second in the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap, and should again run well forward. One nicely handicapped appears to be Miss Ransom (8.1). This filly won the Juvenile at ’Hawera in Imin and although she carried only the minimum, she proved equal to defeating a good one like Royal Ceres (9.10), the unplaced division including Gold Dawn (8.12), Tea Miss (8.4) and. Te Atiawa (7.9). Fermanagh (7.6) was third. On her second at Trentham, and her first at Hawera, Miss Ransom should be prominent, but Tea Mies can be depended upon to go well. The meeting closes with the

Ned Kelly had 8.13 when he won on Thursday, and 81bs extra may not stop him to-day. Gold -Dawn won the Juvenile the first day with 8.11, and has 21b more now. Paul Lucerne’s running suggests that he has had enough racing, but Mendip, who won the Trial Hack Handicap with 8.9 at Hawera, reads well. Ned Kelly, Mendip and Gold Dawn (if reserved) will come in for solid backing. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) The Dunedin J.C. and Poverty Bay T.C. summer meetings conclude to-day. » » # * Limerick’s presence in the Hazlett Stakes at Dunedin to-day will be a big draw. « * * # Bright Glow lightened up a lot between Hawera and New Plymouth, and needs a spell. » # # # Mr. J. B. Gaisford had not had much luck with Koauau in the south, until the All Red gelding returned a fine dividend on Thursday. * * * * Pink Note duly collected the Dunedin Cup on Thursday, and had to run fast time—2.32 —to accomplish the feat. * • * '* The Taranaki Cup was run to suit the top-weights, the first four furlongs taking 56 l-ssec, and the first six furlongs Imin 23sec. # # * # Rin-Tin-Tin beat all but Goblin Market in the Dunedin Champagne ..Stakes. The horse with a name like a Chinese opera may do better to-day. » * * * Hipo was started in the Taranaki Cup, it is said, to make the pace solid for Mint Leaf. The joke of the plan is that neither was ever prominent in a slcwly-run race. # * * » In carrying the steadier of 9st 6ib to victory in the Taranaki Cup, Hynanna equalled the performance of Convoy (1904). In 53 years the race has been won only twice under bigger weights, Lady Medallist carrying 9.11 in 1911, and Kick Off scoring with 9.10 in 1923. * * * * When Stormy won the Marton Cup he canre at the business end, shaping like a stayer. At Wingatui on Thursday he took on Money Order, Booster and Co. in a six furlongs race, and went under. Wonder if he will be set for the mile and a quarter race to-day?

W’iien Reg. Mackie steered Hynanna home in front of the field i n '^ l<J Taranaki Cup on Thursday, the Awapuni horseman rode his second winner of the race, his previous success being on the Greenwood representative, Afterglow, in

Mention of Hynanna and Afterglow brings to mind that both rank as wmthe Eghaont and Taranaki Cups. Others to attain a similar honour were Larry (1882), Normanby (1883-4), Monte Carlo (1895). Coronet (19OT). Convoy (1904), Paritutu (1905), Kick

Off (1923), Stork (1925) and Piuthair (1927).

Lady Quex showed a lot of pace in the two-year-old handicap on Thursday, but whatever chance she might have had with Gold Dawn and Tea Miss was lost when she began to run about, pursuing a most erratic course. She was not the only bad-mouthed filly in the race, Fermanagh being another.

The Hawk stood at the barrier like a great, handsome statue on Thursday, and dwelt slightly when the barrier lifted, allowing Lady Cavendish to take the rails. To some people it looked as If The Hawk was unlucky, but the mare made all her own running, and was travelling strongly at the end. so there could not have been much in it. » * * *

Mrs. Hickey had no luck with Epistle and Sandbun' at Foxton, but both made ample amends at Gisborne, Epistle paying remarkably good prices. Both may keep on winning at “the smalls,” though Epistle is now getting up in the weights and is asked to concede weight to a good horse like White Fang over six furlongs. * .» * » •

GEORGE There was a large attendance. of visiting and local enthusiasts at the White Hart Stables, New Plymouth, yesterday, when Newton King, Ltd., submitted for sale a number of thoroughbred horses on-‘behalf of the trustees in the estate of the late Mr. Newton Kyig, Mr. P. Johnson and Mr. E. L. Mason. There appeared, however, to be very little demand, only one horse changing hands, that being'the well-known racehorse Oration, aged syrs, by Ciceroi—’Elsie Hart, which was offered on behalf of the trustees of the late Mr. Newton King. This horse, which is in active training and has an engagement at the Taranaki meeting to-day, was started at 100 guineas and went up to 220 guineas, at which the bidding hung fire. It was then announced that the reserve was 300 guineas, and Mr. E. George, who was the highest previous bidder, said he would purchase the horse at that price. Oration has been trained by E. George ever since starting his racing career, so that he will still remain in his old stable.

A two-year-old unbroken gelding by Potoa—White Crane, a half-brother to that well-known performer Stork, was also submitted on behalf of the same owner and started at 60 guineas. An offer of 75 guineas was received, but did not reach the reserve and the gelding was passed. ■Seven lots were submitted on behalf of Mr. P. Johnson, of New Plymouth, but though bids were put in for a couple of them, none reached the reserve and they were passed. They were: — Brood mare Waitui (Red Rain —Duart) in foal to Ruapapa. Aged gelding Mountain Gold (Multifid —Necktie).

Six-year chestnut colt Tamatere (Hal lowmas—Waitui), in full training.

Three-year-old chestnut gelding (Bisogne —Waitui). Three-year-old bay filly (Bisogne— Movement).

Yearling bay filly (Daniloff —Move ment).

Yearling chestnut filly (Daniloff —Waitui). An offer was also received for a three-year-old filly by Campfire—lWahine, submitted on account of Mr. E. L. Mason, but it did not reach the reserve and was passed. •
