DEAD MAN IDENTIFIED

THE JUNCTION ROAD FATALITY LONG WALK FROM WELLINGTON

George Hughes has been established as the name of the elderly man Who was found dead on the Junction Road on Thursday morning. A telegram received by the police from the commissioner at Wellington yesterday said that it was believed the dead man was George Henry Huges, a returned soldier, born in England in 1876. His next, of kin was Mrs. C. Webb, Dingle, Liverpool. A Diend was Mr. Room, of Fielding. He left a portmanteau and clothing at 4 Garrett Street,- Wellington, nine months ago. His military papers said ho belonged to the Church of England. A photograph was being forwarded. The inquest was opened yesterday before the coroner, Mr. R. W. Ttate, S.M., and was adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been given by Everard Gilmour. Mr; Gilmour, a member of the Taranaki Hospital Board, said that Hughes and a man named Harry Knight had applied to the board for charitable relief on December 31. They said they had walked from Wellington looking for work. They had come via Masterton, ■Palmerston North, Fielding and Wanganui.

They had arrived in New Plymouth the previous night and had had othing to eat since then. They asked if they eould work for the board in return for board and lodging, but the board then had no work to offer, as it was already employing several men. Both the applicants said they were unmarried. It was decided to provide tea, bed and breakfast at the Victoria Boardinghouse.

Hughes had said he did not drink, but the next . irning Mr. Gilmour saw the two of them under the influence of liquor and he immediately telephoned the chairman of the -board suggesting that the men should be given no farther relief should they carl. He did not see Hughes again.
