GENERAL. Figures relating to the recent visit of the Taranaki Regimental Band to Stratford are now available. At Ngaere Gardens in the afternoon' 700 people contributed, with the result that after paying all expenses the band had £5. In the evening £l3 was collected at Victoria Park, Stratford, so from the two sources the visitors made a profit of £lB and, according to members of the band, had a “jolly good time” as well. The band hopes to visit Stratford again in the near future. A motorist journeying from New Plymouth to Stratford yesterday morning reported seeing a fine pukaka with young searching for food at the edge of a small swamp near the junction of the Lepper Road and the Mountain Road. Fire completely destroyed a five-roomed house on the Flint Road, owned by Mr. Evan Jones, Toko, and occupied by Mr. J. Higgens and family, early this morning. Practically nothing was saved, the house being demolished in a very short time. The occupants were able to escape, but a great deal of their belongings was burned. The house was insured for only a small sum. “I think the Stratford Borough Council workmen are more obliging and hard-work-ing than those of any borough council I have had anything to do with during my 30 years in New Zealand,” said Father Cahill at the farewell function tendered him on Tuesday night by the Roman Catholic parishioners. QUEEN CARNIVAL FUNCTIONS. The attention of residents in the vicinity is drawn to the fact that a dance is to be held at Pembroke Road hall to-night in aid of the Mt. Egmont queen candidate. The dance will not take place in the school. This week-end the committee supporting the band and fire-brigade candidate will organise a large picnic to Tangarakau, a special train having been arranged for the occasion. Activities connected with the campaign of the Plunket candidate will centre round the “Red Ramblers” Cabaret which will be held in the Town Hall, Stratford, on Friday evening, Tables may be reserved and men are requested to come in flannels.
