SCHOOL COMMITTEES MEET
CENTRAL SCHOOL. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held on Tuesday night. Those present were: Mr. S. G. Smith (chairman), Mesdames Chapman and Jemison, Messrs. V. L. Garth, H. J. Godfrey, C. Waters, F. Coleman (lion, secretary) and W. L. Wagstaff. The headmaster reported the number on the roll to be 815, as against 838 at the commencement of last year. The concreting done during the. holidays would be of great benefit. Correspondence was read from the Education Board regarding appointments to the staff, and from the Pukekura Park carnival committee regarding the historical pageant, in support of which Mr. J. McLeod waited on the committee and explained the objects of the carnival, and hoped that the school would nominate a queen and assist the carnival committee to attain their object. The committee accorded its support to the carnival, and a meeting will be held this (Thursday) evening to forward the campaign. It was resolved that the congratulations of the committee be extended to Mr. Wagstaff and to the two pupils, IMenzies and R. Dearnley, on their winning junior national scholarships. In view of the conditions prevailing it was decided that the annual picnic be held on Thursday, March 1, at the East End Reserve. The headmaster reported that the Rev. Braddock had commenced his scries of Bible talks to the children. VOGELTOWN SCHOOL. ’ The Vogeltown committee met on Tuesday evening. Those present were: Messrs. W. Healy (chairman), P. Carroll, J. Spindler," W. Oliver and A. Evans. The headmaster (Mr. T. A. Nicol!) was also present. Air. 11. Dempsey (representing the Pukekura Park Board) waited on the committee with reference to the proposed pageant in-aid of the park funds. —After considering the matter of nominating a queen candidate it was decided to write to the secretary asking for further details. The Rev. H. Braddock was present with reference to proposed religious instruction of school children, but the committee was not in favour of the proposal. Correspondence was received from the Education Board stating that the additional shelter-shed accommodation asked for by the committee would be proceeded with. —It was reported that the work was now almost completed and would be greatly appreciated by teachers and scholars. It was decided to hold the school picnic in the Huatokl Domain on March 3, and to raise funds for the picnic a concert will be held in the Presbyterian Hall, and, if possible, one in Frankleigh Park prior to that date. The matter of arranging a programme for the concert was left in the hands of Mr. Carroll.
The headmaster reported that owing to a large number of Standard 6 having left, and several families having left the district, the roll number was somewhat lower than at the end of last year, the number now on the roll being 155. It was decided to write to the Borough Council drawing its attention to Hie number of children travelling to and from school from Smith Street to the borough boundary, and pointing out that, with the buses and the greatly increased traffic now using this road, it was decidedly dangerous for children, there being only a narrow strip of metal and no footpath for the greater part of the distance.
