Mr. T. O. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, is visiting New Plymouth. Messrs. G. H. Dolby and E. B. Ellerm left New Plymouth on Monday for Christchurch, where they will attend the conference of the Libraries Association.

Mr. A. R. Thompson, manager of the New Plymouth branch of the Union Steamship Company, returned yesterday morning after a fortnight’s holiday spent at Tauranga and Auckland.

At the meeting of the Inglewood County Council yesterday the chairman (Cr. R. Stewart) and Cr. Lawrence were appointed to represent the council on the Northern Committee of the Egmont National Park Board.

Lady Chamberlain, wife of the Foreign Secretary, has been suffering with neuritis and has been ordered a sea voyage. She will leave for South America on February 15, says a British Official Wireless message. Mr. A. S. Clarke, manager of the New Plymouth branch of the New Zealand Insurance Company, leaves on Friday for a holiday at Mayor Island. Mr. Clarke intends devoting part of his time to deep sea fishing. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ambury are on a visit to New Plymouth. They remain here till early next week and then proceed to Christchurch, where Mr. Ambury will attend the Methodist Conference, which opens on the 16th inst. Mr. M. J. Crombie, who was wellknown in North Taranaki cricket circles some years ago, was on Monday evening elected a member of the New Zealand Golf Council in place of Major A. E. Conway, who resigned owing to his transfer to Taranaki, states a Press Association message.

Miss Ena Stockley and Miss Kathleen Miller arrived at Sydney yesterday by the Maunganui, and were welcomed on the wharf by swimming officials. They then had a practice swim. They will compete in the New South Wales championships on Saturday, states a Press Association message. Messrs. F. J. Hill, T. Horton and W. Putt leave to-day for Wellington to join the New Zealand bowlers visiting England and Canada. Mt J. D. Sole, another local member of the team, will join the party later. Messrs. Hill, Sole and Putt have each been presented by their club members with a fountain pen. The presentations were made by Mr. T. McPhillips, president of the club, who expressed the hope that the recipients would have an enjoyable tour.

Members of the New Plymouth Male Choir met at the practice room on Monday evening to farewell Mr. W. Putt on the eve of hi.; departure for England with the New Zealand bowlers. Appreciative reference to his work in the choir was made by Messrs. W. L. Hay (conductor), Dearnley (secretary), McKenzie and Powell, and Mr. Putt was ■presented with a silver cigarette case as a mark of esteem. Supper was served, and musical items were contributed by Messrs. Dearnley, Me Kenzie, Putt, Shaw and Veale, with Mr. Hay at the piano. Mr. T. Horton, superintendent of Pukekura Park, who is to leave for Wellington this morning to join the New Zealand bowlers on their tour of England and Canada, was on Monday the guest of the Park Board at afternoon tea at the kiosk. Mr. F. Amoore, in presenting Mr. Horton with a pair of binoculars, said that during his term of about four years at the park he had earned the appreciation of all for his work. They hoped his health would be benefitted during the trip. In responding Mr. Horton said the flora of New Plymouth and Taranaki had a great appeal for him and he had refused many tempting offers from other districts. So long as he had the confidence of the board, however, he could not be persuaded to go. His interest in his work had been greatly added to through the establishment of the fernery The death occurred at Tuakau on Sunday of Mr. Colin McMillan, aged 94 years, who had been a resident of New Zealand for 08 years, during which time he was for many years farming in the Auckland and Taranaki districts. Mr. McMillan came to New Zealand from Campbelltown, Argyllshire, Scotland, in 1859, when 26 years of age. He made the voyage in the ship Spray of the Ocean. After a year in New Zealand he was joined by Mrs. McMillan, and ihey settled at Mangere, where they remained for some ten years. Later they were fanning at Tauku for several years, and then at Tuakau for over 20 years. They then went to Taranaki and were farming at Riverlea, Kaponga, for some 20 years. Eight years ago they retired and returned to Tuakau. Among activities in which Mr. McMillan took part was the founding of the Presbyterian Church at Tuakau. He was one of those who helped to build the church. Mrs. McMillan died seven years ago. There are four sons and four daughters living. The sons are Messrs. R. McMillan (Kamo), Neil McMillan (Auckland), Colin McMillan (Rata),and Thomas McMillan (Kaponga). The daughters are Mesdames W. Smeed, sen. (Tuakau), H. Campbell (Papatoetoe), S. L. Lewis (Tuakau), and V. Membery (Papakura). There are 43 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
