BUTTER TRADE MENACED
PRESERVATIVES PROHIBITED DETERIORATION OF THE QUALITY COLONIAL PRODUCE MAY SUFFER. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. A. and N.Z. London, Feb. 6. Commenting on the use of preservatives in butter, The Grocer says: "The full effects of the prohibition of preservatives will not be felt in the Colonies t<ll next season owing to the large quantities sold by factories on c.i.f. terms. But purchasers are suffering enormous losses, especially upon best Kangaroo butter from factories which farmerly turned out best quality butter. “England has to rely on imported butter, but naturally desires to give preference to products of its own Colonies. These rapidly deteriorate after being removed from cold storage. Deterioration is only prevented by the use of, preservatives, so we shall evidently have to rely more and more on Continental countries, who will reap a glorious harvest at the Colonies’ expense.”
