INTERNATIONAL CROQUET

DOMINION TOURNAMENT OPENED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. The Dominion tournament of the New Zealand Croquet Council commenced today, the entries constituting a record, being 100 more than last year. The president of the council, Mr. J. Murray, said that this year’s tournament marked an epoch in New Zealand croquet because of the visit of the English team, to whom he extended a hearty welcome. An official welcome was also extended ■ by the Mayor. Play to-day was confined to the handicap doubles, in which 102 players are taking part. The first round and *. portion of the second were completed. The English visitors paired against each other, Colonel Dupre (minus 2J) and Miss Steel (minus 3) beat Sir F. Wemyss (minus 2) and Miss Retallack (minus 2), 26—15.
