WESTOWN SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Westown school committee was held last night, when there were present Messrs. Jas. Gareia (chairman), L. T. Haylock, W. F. Southam, W. G. Anstis, J. Green, Marsden and J. W. Darby (honorary secretary). Leave of absence was granted Mr. W. J. Ewart. The headmaster (Mr. W. A. Brown) reported that the school had closed with a roll number of 267 fort the December quarter and had re-opened with 258. He would like to bring before the committee the desirability of running an excursion. Apart from being pleasant outings, such trips were of great educative value. Various matters required attention, including the putting of the clocks in repair, the tuning of the piano and the painting of some of the blackboards. It was decided to hold a picnic on Saturday, February 25, at Stratford or Hawera if possible, and a sub-committee consisting of the headmaster, Mr. J. Green, the secretary and chairman was appointed to make arrangements. If possible, an endeavour will be made to arrange for another school to join. It was resolved to give all possible support in connection with the historical pageant to be held in aid of the funds of Pukekura Park and the sportsground. Later, Messrs. C. N. Johnson and S. E. Neilson waited on the committee in connection with the latter proposal, when it was suggested that instead of giving prizes to the winning queen, school committees should be given a percentage of the money raised. The Rev. H. Braddock waited on the committee in connection with the proposal to give religious instruction in schools after school hours. After some discussion the application was declined. The Education Board notified the appointment of Miss E. J. Wells as probationer and Mr. A. L. Kidson as substituted assistant at the school. In connection with the proposed establishment of a seventh standard, the committee favoured the idea, provided the necessary accommodation and staff were provided. The grounds superintendent (Mr. W. G. Anstis) reported that the agricultural plot was in good order. It was resolved to thank Mr. W. T. Mills for the work that he had put in the plot. Messrs. W. Marsden and J. Green were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
