PROTEST FROM TEACHERS
SLUR ON THE PROFESSION PROPOSALS OF EDUCATION BILL FINES TO ENFORCE DISCIPLINE By Teleijraph.—Press Association. . Wellington, Last Night. At a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Education Institute held tc-niglit to consider the Education Amendment Bill now before Parliament, strong exception was taken to the clause in the Bill providing for the imposition of a tine up to £lO on any teacher guilty ol wilful disobedience of any lawful command or of neglect of duty, such fine to be deducted from tlie teacher’s salary, Jt was pointed out that this clause cast an unnecessary reflection upon the teaching service as a whole, and in view of the high esteem in which the profession was held by the public, it was, implied that the suggestion that it was necessary to discipline its members by a system of fines was quite uncalled for. There was already available adequate and effective means of safeguarding the efficiency and good conduct of. the ser-. vice.
It was decided fo enter a strong prolest against a proposal which, in its operation, would tend to lower the pres■tige of the. profession in the eyes of the, public.
