OPUNAKE MAN ARRESTED

GN CHARGE OF THEFT. T. H. H. Sinclair, a prominent Opunake resident, was arrested in Opunake yesterday by Detective Meiklejohn and later charged at the Opunake Court, before Mr. A. O’Brien, J.P., with the theft, on or about February 8-, 1926, of £9 14s, the property of the Taranaki Horpital Board. On the application of the police, accused was remanded to appear at the Opunake Court on October 25, bail being allowed in two sureties of £lOO each, Detective Meiklejohn stating, when the question of bail was before the court, that the sum of over £lOO was- involved. POST OFFICE FOR MOTUROA PETITION SENT TO PARLIAMENT, A petition bearing over 340 signatures has been forwarded to Parliament from the Moturoa district asking for the establishment of a post and telegraph office there. This is now a necessity, it is considered, on account of the increasing requirements of the port and the district. Under present conditions telegrams for Moturoa- residents are handled by the New Plymouth office and, as the district is outside the area of free delivery, a delivery fee is collected from the' recipient of each telegram. This is a cause of much annoyance and is tbe basis of one of the main arguments of the petition. Residents of Moturoa frequently coming in contact with men from the numerous vessels visiting the port, find that these visitors miss the facilities of a post office. Oftimes it is inconvenient for them to come into New Plymouth for the sole purpose of sending a telegram or banking money, and consequently the establishment of an office would be much appreciated by. the shipping community. Many other arguments have bee:: used in the petition, which includes amongst its signatories those of the New Plymouth shipping agents, the Harbour Board and the Meat Producers’ Freezing Company. Some of the canvassers accepted only one signature from each household, but it is thought that if every person having the right to vote had signed the list would have been more than doubled. As far as is known no one in the district was not in accordance with the proposal.
