THE JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS.

CHILDREN SHOULD SEE ALL. “The Jubilee Committee sent out a number of promissory notes asking that ratepayers should sign them as a basis of financing the prelitninaiy stages of the jubilee celebrations,” sail the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, ou Monday night. He went, on to say that, personally, he. would be very disappointed if an appreciable profit was not made out of the occasion, but, at the same time, the more notes that were signed the better the arrangements that could be made. In this connection he thought the council should give a lead, for it was useless io expect other townspeople to sign when members of the council themselves had overlooked the matter. He hoped each councillor would sign before leaving the room that evening. Cr. S. A, Ward mentioned that he had not yet signed his note,’ and did not intend to do .o until he knew more about what was being done. For instance, he said, every child up to a certa'n age should be allowed free entrance to all functions. He was just afraid the committee was making too much of the business side and in so doing was forgetting the purpose for which the celebrations were being held. He had no objection to signing the note or giving a straight-out donation if he was assured the committee would consider the children in this matter. The Mayor: You can take it that the committee has the welfare of the children as much at heart as anybody, and will give every facility for their interest in the proceedings. Cr. Ward: I don’t think so. The Mayor: It is useless to speak i. a that. The committee was elected at a public meeting and, of course, they will consider the children. Cr. R. F. Harkness agreed with the Mayor that everybody should get behind the celebrations and help on the preparations even though it cost a little both in time and money. In answer to Cr. Ward he smilingly remarked; “I will guarantee that more than half the kids will get in free whether the committee want them to or not.”

The matter was then dropped, but it is understood a number of notes were duly filled up after the meeting closed.
