STRATFORD TENNIS CLUB

ENJOYABLE SEASON REVIEWED. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Stratford Lawn Tennis Club was held last night, the president (Mr 11. E. Lawrence) presiding over a good attendance. The annual report was as follows:—■ ‘'During the year the committee filled vacancies occurring by the election of Mrs. Weston, Messrs. Fisher and Kendrick to tiie committee. “The membership roll continues to be in a healthy condition, but there is accommodation on the courts for a much larger membership. This last winter a large number of white players paid fees for the use of the courts. “hi the early part of the season the whole of the asphalt courts had the lines permanently painted in, which proved a great, saving of work. Last years’ report recommended the topdressiug of all six -courts, as Nos, I, 2 and 3 were then showing want of repair. Courts 4, 5 and 6 were top-dressed during the past season, and showed a marked improvement, but it will he necessary during the coming year to give attention to courts 1,2 and 3. The whole of the grass courts have already been cut and rolled by members. It is hoped to have them in thoroughly good order for play this season, “The balance-sheet will show that the club’s finances are continually improving and liabilities are being reduced, with the exception of course of the loan on the debentures. In addition to this it has to be noted that permanent improvements are being paid for out ol annual revenue. “The club championships resulted as follows: —Men’s singles, K. Wilson; ladies’ singles, Mrs. Weston; men’s doubles, Messrs. Seoble and Lawrence; ladies’ doubles, Mrs. Weston and Miss Mackay. The mixed doubles were not completed. The club entered teams in both Thursday and S turday Taranaki competitions. The Thursday players had only very few matches owing to the few entries. The Saturday players were only beaten in the final match. “Considerable interest was taken iu the competition for the Ranford buttons. A full list of the members with handicaps was published by the captain early in the season and members were enthusiastic- The combined doubles buttons presented by some of the members also caused considerable interest. The ladder was re-organised at the beginning of the season and a large number 'of matches were played. Members are urged to get their names on the ladder and to endeavour to improve their position. “The incoming committee is recommended to make some arrangements with regard to afternoon tea on club days.” With regard to the recommendation that subscriptions should be reduced, it was decided to leave them as they were. The report was then adopted. The following new members were elected:—Mesdames C. Ennis, Higgs and Richardson and Messrs. Higgs, Ennis, Lawn, J. McCormick and Death; country members, Miss Cave and Mr. W. Thomson. Officers for the ensuing season were elected as follows: —President, Mr. E. C. A. Gaw; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. A. Mackay and U. Seoble; club captain, Mr. Wilson; secretary and treasurer, Mr E. Lawrence; executive committee, Misses Weston, B. Masters and Messrs. Fisher, Kendrick and Clements; afternoon tea committee, Misses Masters, Keatley, Rogers, Jackson, Keatley and Weston; delegate to Taranaki Laws' Tennis Association, Mr. E C, A. Gaw; auditor, Mr. G, A. Carter. It was decided to hold the opening day on Thursday, September 22. It was also decided to ask the Mayor to officiate. It was resolved chat the term for winter players should ba extended to October 31, provided that their play did not interfere with that of club members.
