CYCLE ROAD RACE
TARANAKI-WANGANUI CENTRE. The third of a series of fom’ cycle road races took place on Wednesday in Hawera, when a good field faced the starter for the Cambrian .Rose Bowl. A good crowd assembled at the Eg nont A. and P. grounds to view the start, and great enthusiasm attended the finish of the race. The race was won by J. Dykes, who drew away 30 yards ahead of Moore in a fine finish. C. Erricson, of Wanganui, gained fastest time. Out of over 30 nominations, 15 riders faced the starter. The course was one of about 37J miles. Leaving the grandstand, the riders went once round the oval, out to the Glover Road through Normanby-Okaiawa, via Ohaipaipe and Palmer Ronds to Kaponga, via the Mauaia Road to Manaia and Hawera and thence back to the grandstand. The weather was fine, but with a keen head wind to Kaponga, and with a side wind ' on the return, it was not expected that' very fast times would be established.
“ The officials had every arrangement well in hand, enabling the race to commence well up to time. The officials were: —Judges, Messrs. W. A. Spragg and A. Grant; starter, Air. L. Marter; handicapper, Mr. L. Palmer; timekeeper, Mr. H. McCabe. Several road pickets were placed on corners and points of vantage. The Cambrian Rose Bowl was donated by Mr. W. P. Lamb. Before the. race the positions were: H. Kelson 7, J. Dykes, A. G. Moore, G. Ingram 6, C. Walker, G. H. Perrott, R. Kelson 5, Garratt 4, J. R. Kelly, H. McCabe 3, A. Gyde and R- Rumble 2. The limit man was overhauled near Normanby, and several bunches were riding strongly until Kaponga was reached. An easy ride down the Manaia Road found R. W. Kelson leading by a quarter of a mile, witli Lay and Walker separated by 50 yards next, and then a. bunch of Moore, Kelson jnv., Percival and Newton, with the rear strung out. S. W. Kelson maintained his lead till just beyond Riverdale, when Dykes and Moore, riding together, overhauled him, the placings then being: Dykes, Moore, Kelson, Purcival, 11. Kelson and Newton. The finish was a very fine one, giving J. Dykes a clear 30* yards ahead of Moore, followed closely by Purcival and S W. Kelson a lap and a half behind. The fastest time was gained by C. Erriecson, Wanganui, who took 1 hour 45 minutes 3 seconds, with V. S. Tippett Erricson, Wanganui, who took 1 hour 45 minutes 10 seconds. J. Dykes, the winner, took 1 hour 46 minutes 32 seconds. The scratch man pulled out at Manaia. The results are: J. Dykes (Bmin) 1 A. G. Moore (lOmin) 2 Purcival, Wanganui (9rain 30sec)... 3 S. W. Kelson (llmin 30see) ....... 4 H. Kelson (7min 30sec) s J. Newton, Wanganui (lOmin) 6 J. Dykes will represent the centre in the 50 mile New Zealand Road "Race Championship, to be run at Mercer on September 10.
