SENSATIONAL AIR SMASH
OBSERVER'S TRAGIC END DANGLING FROM IOOOFT. PARACHUTE HANGS ON TAH4 By Telegraph—Press .Assn— Copyright. Received Aug. 31, 5.5 p.m. London, Aug. 30. While Observer Lothian and FlyingOfficer Hudson were at a height of 1000 feet in a De Haviland machine at Farnborough, Lothian was observed to crawl on to the fuselage in readiness for a parachute drop. Instead of clearing the machine, tho parachute caught in the tail and Lothian dangled in mid-air, suspended from hie waist-straps. He 'attempted repeatedly to climb the hanging para.chute.
The pilot continually corrected the course of the ’plane, the tail, of which was now useless, and managed to keep the balance, despite the dead weight. Hudson made a wonderful landing, by almost vertical flying, stopping immediately. Lothian, who was picked up unconscious and suffering from a fractured skull aud an injured spine, died in hospital.
